Advice...

Anyone want to have a deep probably like 30minute plus discussion on the RX8 as I am looking to purchase within the next few months.....

I am on verizon so that would be a plus.... Let me know if you would be willing to give a newbie a nice talk... and first hand experience knowledge...

Dude, this entire website is based on that. Basically you are buying an engine manufactured by doritos that will explode at 30,000 miles. And you have to put oil in it every 100 miles.

WTF?

Actually I called and talked to a rotary mechanic earlier today for like 15 minutes but he said the only things to watch out for was flooding, and keep it lubed....

Okay then you just answered your own question. The only thing you have to worry about is flooding and your engine will probably die but you have a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty so it doesn't matter. Just go test drive one and if you have any specific questions use the search function at the top instead of spamming new threads about randomass youtube videos.

well man im not up for the phone. but i'll talk to ya on here for a little. lets see. what can i say. get the 6 speed. add oil every 3 fill ups. don't turn the engine off if it's cold, dont rev to high if the engine is cold. thats really the only preventative maintence you need. i mean change the oil on time to. but the car is wonderful. i havent had any real problems. great handling...great red line, i drove a sti a few days ago, and a rb26 powered 240sx putting down 580 today...and each time i got back in the 8 with a sigh of relief. honestly i just love the car. what do you want to know man?

Ok, SO what will the life of the engine be... I am going to try and buy one with 50-60k miles.... assuming its been moderately taken care of... Like how long can I make it last? My normal drives are 10 minutes plus... with the occasional hour long drive on friday back home and another hour long drive on sunday... I am by no means hard on my car... but I like to let loose through the country roads here.... Any other things that you think I should know would be great....

yeah that's all good and well and he prob did see some of that. but he just wants first hand experience. actually to hear someone personally talk to him about the car, i dont think that's a bad thing. at least he's smart enough to want to get to know about the car, nothing to get all worked up about.

life of the engine just depends, some ppl really do have it go before 30000 some have it over 110000. but it doesnt matter it'll prob go before the warranty is up...and you get a new free one. and do drive it hard. redline it daily.

Ya, I am about to head out of here as well....
I did do research for my ME 351 course and gave a presentation about the Wankel rotary engine, so I am not completely oblivous to them, but I like to have people explain them as if I dont, it helps keep things clear-er because nothing is left unsaid.....

The power made from these engines is amazing, granted there is no lower spectrum torque, or too much torque in general, but These cars are simply amazing, especially with the new ferrari 599xx getting a similar nose as the madzaspeed nose....

My biggest concern is that the lifespan of the car might not be what I want and someone told me the oil change is a bitch.... But basically I am looking to buy sometime between the end of this month and August... Big time frame... But I am still doing research and price hunting....

So far I have these conclusions,
1) Need to carry extra oil....
2) Need to drive it like ya stole it
3) At some point in time FS is the way to go
4) Lower it
5) Visual pleasing mods....

But basically this thread was started so that I could talk to long time owners and see if it is worth buying... Almost like just kinda grill them on their overall experience... what bad has happened... what good has happened....

Things to remember about the 8 is that it isn't a "V8" and it isn't a piston engine. I don't mean to sound rude, it wasn't ment to, but as you read the site you will see what I'm about to say.

Too many wanted a V8 torque and 9sec or so 1/4 and complain when they don't get it. The rotary is not made for that. It's made for high revs and even power rise through the RPMs. It's a subtle power and one that misleads many into thinking it's flat out slow. However the design of the car is not the 1/4 but rather the winding back roads where others fear speed.

The even power through revs is part of not being a piston engine and thus should not be treated as such. Negelct the redline and she'll make you pay. You need to rev the rotary to keep the carbon out and open all the fuel ports. Don't rev it to redline regularly and the carbon will score your apex seals and lead to engine failure. Also, you need to watch the oil more than a pistion because the rotary burns it by design.

Now, having said that, go drive one. Check the carfax and talk to the owner. Did it have a replacement, does the owner know that you need to rev it? Rotarys are a newer tech as far as ICE is concerned so some risk is there but the fun of driving one more than makes up for it.

The lifespan depends greatly on how you treat it. Frequent redlining and oil checks is a great start. LambertRX8 posted this 5 months ago. https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=195 There are many threads from people posting 100K miles.

This is one of the easiest cars I've ever changed the oil on. I can reach the drain plug from the passenger side while the car is setting in my drive way. My 8 isn't lowered. The filter takes a litter maneuvering but is pretty easy to get to also.
