Check on wikipedia, EVOs are classified as sports cars.

^wait so in theory if you would take the front drive assembly out of the STI/EVO would you consider it a sports car? (other than the factor that by definitino it is not)

F1 cars (at least in modern times) are not two seaters, so that rules them out.

But if F1 is a sports car and AWD is not, how do you classify the Ferguson?

IMHO, two seats is a big part of something being a sports car. Not ironclad, though, if you think about the Isetta or the SmartCar. Back seat does not really break the 2 seat rule, if they're tiny and make it a 2+2. Remember the 2+2 version of the XKE? Or the back seat in the Spitfire?

Whether the RX-8 is a four seater or 2+2 depends on how big you and your friends are.

I'll give you that many of todays performance cars do not fit the traditional description of a sports car, however to say all FWD, AWD, etc cars are not sporty is assinine. Times have change man.

For those of you who said that the TL is faster than the 8 and have been blown away by them, you guys have to learn how to shift better or launch better. One of my buddies have an 06 TL and no way I have ever been blown away by it from a dig or a roll. I was consistently pulling 2-3 car lengths from it within a 1/4 mile.

Not to brag or anything, but just saying the 8 is really not that slow....

Ah - so you're being off-topic, not just mis-spelling things.

The subject is sports cars, not "sporty." There was a period in the 60s when people started saying "sporty" either as a modest slam against sports cars, or as an extension to recognize cars like the Barracuda that were as much fun for their owners as traditonal sports cars were for theirs.

One seat versus two seats is a very important distinction. When Grand Prix racing was defined to be Formula 1, it was part of a reorganization of motor racing that set F1 as a single seat driver's championship, and Sports Cars as a two seat manufacturer's championship. I'm not sure how much remains of a second seat in today's top classes of sports cars, but to call a F1 car a sports car is definitely a violation of the international sporting regulations.

I have an Acura CL-typeS-fwd, a Toyota Rav4-awd, and a Porsche 911- rwd. I only consider one a sports car.

How did SUV's get into this?
It's bad enough that we are talking about race cars [F1?] and 4 door 5 seat sedans.
2 seats vs 2+2 smaller sports/sporty cars I can understand.

Can a 4 door 5 seater be sporty? Yes.
Is it a sports car? No. Maybe a sports sedan... Maybe....

No matter how slow people cry the RX-8 is it is still closer to a sports car in any class than the TL.

SPORT Utility Vehicle.

If we're talking about two door, two seat vehicles with manual transmissions and a lot of power, Kenworth and Peterbuilt make some really nice sports cars.

Rx-8 does not have enough HP to be a sports car? Ask Lotus, Honda, Hyundai, BMW, etc how they do their sports car? and my FC, its only NA, I got it about a month ago, it has 160 hp only. but when Im done fixing it, which takes probably another 2-3 weeks. Im sure that it can take your buddy's "1337" TL around the track without a sweat. on STOCK SIZE Tires. Trust me. Im even willing to put 100 bux bet on it. Its a PURE sports car btw. I dont even need to take my Rx-8 out to eat a TL for breakfast.

Its really sad that people really think its all about the highest HP. rofl.

I guess you need a new friend. your "current" friend is nothing but a moron.

I feel that a sub can only be considered a "sports" sub if it has the nuclear engine. The NA ones are pretty slow.

Hyundai makes a sportscar, or are you being facetious?

Yes, Hyundai makes a sports car: the Genesis Coupe. I test drove both the 4-cyl Turbo and V6. I was extremely impressed with how it looks, handles, and performs. People laugh at Hyundai now but they won't be a few years from now.

I'm familiar with the model, Mike, though I haven't driven it (don't really have any interest in buying). Even though it's RWD and 2 doors I still wouldn't classify it as a sportscar, however. Sportscars don't share their underpinnings with sedans and other family trucksters, and they don't weigh 3500+ pounds, even though to just about all people out there their appearance says sportscar.
