Just leave the car parked at school all week instead of taking it home every night. Problem solved! :D

f*cking high school kid like to show off.... keep the car at home and get a moped for christs sake... 0.65 miles? that's like 900 meters, takes you 10 minutes to casually walk to school... 5 minutes if you get a moped/bike.... probably a lot faster than driving...

so, you are going to warm the car up for 3-5 minutes, drive there, find a place to park, and walk to class. hmmm. Costs more money, takes more time, wears on your car in a horrible way (it's been understated here what short distance driving will do to your car), and you want to drive to show off your car and drive to lunch. WOW. I've been there. High school was the best 6 years of my life, but do the math.

Also, going out to lunch will make you VERY unhealthy if that's what you eat all the time. So, sum it up....walking is better for your health, and bringing something to eat from home is probably healthier too.

:D

Oh to add another thing, you are going to get HORRIBLE gas mileage if you're only taking it 0.65miles. My prediction is is 9MPG.

I'm starting to understand why the rest of the world views Americans as lazy, superficial fat-asses

My commute is about 15 minutes, that should be long enough to warm it up on a normal day, right? Also, what do you guys do when you have to move the car just a few feet? I was at a party recently and my car was blocking someone else's who had to leave, so I had to go move it. It was a jeep so np, but in the same situation is that really bad for the rx8?

Also, several of you mentioned revving the engine up before you turn it off. The sales guy I talked to said that was the absolute WORST thing you could do. Can anyone clarify?

Thanks

That is long enough. You can tell just by looking at your temperature gauge. If it's between the C and the H, it's plenty warmed up. If it's above the C at all, it's *MOST LIKELY* safe to shut off.

Honestly it's not that big of a deal (after the M flash). I've stalled cold and it's started up again many times. But the truth is you just don't want to take the risk you know? It would suck to have to call a tow truck to tow your car away.

As for the revving before you turn it off, I'm pretty sure the owners manual or the supplementary they give you say something about if you have to shut the engine down cold, rev it to 3 or 4K first. Otherwise I think revving while the engine is cold is not recommended.

Oh and bluedragon: Just walk to school and occassionally drive it to school. Just take the long way to school when you want to show off. Most of the time though if you want to eat out, why don't you just walk home, pick up your car, etc? I would think you'd rather have your car home anyways otherwise you might risk some bastard keying your car for no reason.

If I ever have to move my car a few feet, I would see if I can push it with a couple of friends first (ie backing out of the garage to wash the car). If not then I will reluctantly start it AND THEN rev to 3K or so for a few moments and shut off the engine immediately. You'll hear the rotors spin down for a few seconds.

Once again, would you really trust your sales guy?? My guy told me that it was a V6 engine with a rotary intake (what the heck!). IN FACT, Mazda recommends that in the winter, if not sufficiently warmed, that you rev the engine for a few moments before shut down.

What revving and then turning off the car does, is it allows the rotors to spin while there is no fuel being injected into the engine ... this allows any unburnt fuel to spin out of the engine hence preventing lovely flooding.

During cold weather I've found that at least 8 minutes of run time is needed to get the engine properly warmed up. I have NOT had good experiences reving the engine prior to shut down. It has always resulted in a significantly longer crank time at start up. I've had my best starts by just making sure the idle has dropped below 1000 before shut off.

Are those of you who rev to ~4k burping it to 4k, then shutting off after returning to idle?

Blue Frenzy, you type faster than I do. So you are holding at high rpm, and shutting off at that high rpm. I'll try that sometime. I was reluctant shut off while in the act of adding fuel to the engine to prevent flooding.

Domer, the recommendation is to hold the high RPM for a moment and then immediately switching off the ignition. I know this seems counter intuitive (adding MORE fuel to prevent flooding) but once the ingnition is cut and the engine is still spinning, and the fuel will be spun out of the rotors.

I think that's what airplanes do too ... spin the turbines and then shut off.

Yeah, this is an old rotary trick. After you cut the ignition the injectors cease firing, but the motor is still turning, so the fuel in there gets pushed out the exhaust (where it sometimes ignites and scares your neighbors, depending on your exhaust system).

I'm sorry but if I was in school and had an 8, I would drive it those 4 blocks ever stinking day just to show off. Come-on, nobody that's older and had a muscle car would rather walk to school than to drive it and sit in the parking lot??
