Ocala FL dealer has replaced 5 autos and one manual so far. Lower ambint temps are still causing failures. I think these engines are building up carbon from not being run hard enough.

well maurice's number was wrong but- i am talking about for this issue. the number is probablly actually just over 250 right now for this issue over the last year and a half. total could be double that with the batch that had the coolant failures etc.. i get tthat number where i have always gotten that number.

Hopefully I'll be back with more info after work today.
change to 20w50 stay out of traffic. cause its not that its 100. its that when your sitting in traffic at 100 air ttemp the temp just off the pavement is over 200. so all that heat is collecting by your oil coolers which have no air flow thru them because your sitting in that traffic. better to give extra space in front of your car and keep moving at 5 miles an hour than sittting still. also let the car stretch its legs when you get a chance so it can burn out any carbon build up.

at least its humid where you and swoope are. the humidity actualk helps to cool thing sslightly. the dry air in places like lubbock and vegas and phoenix etc accentuates the issue. carbon buildup has alot to do with it thats why i say if your car (especially autos with one oil cooler) sits in traffic most of the time to get out and run the car if you can.

Yeah. I think that swoope's sarcasm must have missed you.

my numbers come from knowing how many were replaced last summer - for this issue- combined with how many so far this year for this issue. its not counting the few remans that had coolant issues or oilseal issues. nor does it count those for other issues like the coolant leaks from that batch a year or so ago. the nymber could be double counting all issues. i was only discussing it in terms of this issue

Now if the replacement engine could just be one of those factory turbos we hear rumours about.....

What works for fighting carbon buildup (other than not running engine)?

Spirited driving fights carbon buildup. You can run your own test. Change your oil and run your car at low rpms for 2k miles. When you check your oil, it will be very dark and sooty. Change the oil again and run your car at high rpms for the same 2k miles and I"ll bet you a Pepsi that your oil will be noticably cleaner.

I agree. But I've already rendered the other two accounts unusable.

I just found out last weekend that the 8 that I bought used a few months ago had the engine replaced. I couldn't get any additional information out of the dealer though.

Still no news, but i think we've pretty much coverd the problem now thanks to Zoom44. I let the car rev just about every day I drive it, so hopefully I'll be able to avoid this issue - though it would be kind of nice to get a new engine b4 my warrenty runs out next year. If the techs give me any info at all I'll let you all know. No I guess we just have to wait on the new ecu flash.

I went to one of the Mazda dealership's bodyshops today, to pick up a customer for Enterprise, and one of the guys was telling me that the service center has 5 8s in there that all need new engines. I have him looking into it, but I thought I'd ask if anyone here has had any trouble so severe that they needed a replacement engine. I don't know if they're AT or MT yet, but I should find out shortly. Hell it could just be that someone there screwed up an oil change or something.

Again I love my car, just want to prevent something like that from happening to me.
then I was talking to the sales guy and he told me that the 2007 rx-8s will fly! When can I put a deposit on one!?

And you believe a salesman? He may be right, he may be wrong. I just just don't trust them.

I just changed my oil 8 times in a row. Took me 5 hours. 32 quarts of oil and 8 new oil filters, too.

Pay now, or pay later. It's your choice.
