2007 RX8 initial report and note on Oil

Okay, bought my 2007 Touring RX8 in May....I have 24,000 miles on it (it travel alot on highway)

The only problem I have had is the flaking steering wheel which was touched up by an upholstery expert at the Service Department at no cost.

Now on oil consumption. Since I have bought the vehicle, I have added 3/4 of one quart of oil to it. Yes, that is 0.75 quarts over 24,000 miles

What I do is monitor the oil consumption......when it is due for an oil change, I take it in and they replace (topping it off). I have not accelerated the times I take it in for oil changes. I just take it in at normal scheduled times, but I don't add oil the week before the change. If it is still in the operating range level.....I don't touch it. Only three times, it dropped below that level and I added just a little......totalling 0.75 quarts.

So, the oil consumption issue is a myth as far as I am concerned.

note: I've owned two 1st gen rx-7's and added oil as often as my mom's 1989 camry (of course, she got rid of it long ago).

Maybe you aren't revving it hard enough like you're supposed to.

You know i meself was worried about all ive read on this oil consumption to as i just purchased my 04 rx8 a couple days ago w/19k orig miles and had to drive it 400miles home.
So it had a new oil change the day i drove it home and i looked at the dipstick to see where it was at, well i drove the 400 miles home and when i arrived i checked the oil again and it was exactly where it was before the trip.
I also didnt notice the huge gas consumption i see mentioned here in almost every 3rd or 4th thread and i used midgrade gas.

Oh and i revved it good and redlined prolly 5 times at least and hit 119 and close to it on several occasions on the long stretches of i40

The way the OMP registers how much oil to put into the housing is throttle position *at least that's how it was with the RX-7's*. S4 7's had a bar attached to the throttle body, so when it went up to the more throttle, it opened up the OMP more. S5's did the Electrical one, like the RX-8's have.

So, really, just one day of flooring it a couple times won't significantly drop the oil, that's why it takes a few fill ups to start to top it off. I'd say just keep watching it, though, and if you're not losing anything, and no CEL, you're OK.

They're all different I guess. One quart during the first 3200 miles so far for me....

Loki, it could be that the dealer overfilled your oil at every change. My local Mazda dealer (Wayne Mazda) admitted filling the car with 4 whole quarts of oil at every oil change (recommended fill is 3.6) because they noted most owners do not watch their oil levels and so overfilling that extra 0.4 quarts is better than low oil from neglect. At your next oil change, insist that they fill only 3.6 quarts and if you brought the oil yourself, to return the leftover oil to you.

If this is not the case, you should pre-mix (there is a thread in the Tech Garage section) as low oil consumption is a sign of a weak oil metering pump.

I have an '07 also and it's consumed the normal oil levels others have posted.

Yes I feel better when my 8 eats oil because it is supposed too. I'm worried now that my 8 is not eating oil recently.

If you're not adding oil, what are you using to lubricate the seals?

I, too, have an '07 with 7000 miles. I have added about 2 quarts so far.

Oil use kind of varies. I wonder how the OMP is programmed for highway vs other driving. I've always wanted to ask, but am afraid of starting an oil thread.

I'll usually use about a quart every 2000 miles or so. (Dealer overfills by a half quart, so I add oil between changes only because I'm compulsuve and top off at the half quart.) But last fall I took a 900 mile road trip that was 90% highway driving, and didn't use a drop of oil. Consumption went back to normal once I was back to my usual routine.

My 07 is now sitting on 9000 miles, *I've driven 500 of it* and added 1 quart so far.

The oil consumption will vary on the how you drive it. With mostly city type driving, my 07 will take ~1/2 quart to keep it topped off between 3000 mile oil changes. I probably could get away without topping it off between oil changes.

During track driving it drinks oil at about 1/4 quart per 20 minute session. It'll easily go through a quart during the day.
