Without knowing anything about the 2006 RX-8, for all those asking "should I wait?" the answer is an obvious yes. Wait for concrete evidence of the existence/absence of any substantial changes to the 2006 model year, and then if there's nothing of susbstance, or nothing that suits your fancy, pick yourself up one of the remaining 2005 8s at a huge discount. If done properly, you can save yourself $8000 off of MSRP. That's a lot of mods...

Just my $0.02...

Uh OK when did they set up an $8000 margin in the 8? What are you smoking?

The same thing everyone who paid $24,000K for $32,000 GTs was smoking apparently. That was the deal you could get on '04s from December onwards, and still can if you can find one still.

That's invoice -- about $3,000 below MSRP on a GT -- Plus $5000 in rebates.

Probably won't be getting quite those kind of deals on '05s though just because supply is a lot less with the fire. But you will almost definitely see them in the range of $26,000 -- about $6,000 under MSRP.

if you hve been paying a ttention- mazda hasnt done anything for years for the MODEL YEAR it does them in the actual year. so if it says "rx-8 being launched in 2003" it doesnt get launched in sept of 02 for MY 03 it comes out in actual 03. so a rumoured beter automatic for the high power version or an smg tye tranny for the highpower version rumoured for 06. dont look for them end of 05 for MY 06 look for them in actual 06. thats my theory

FYI I bought my 8 on monday(May 31-05) and the salesman said that the 06 was the last year for the RX-8 and that their production line was going back to the new RX-7's

Not sure how credible the source is.

Off the top of my head, in the entire Ford Motor Company the only SMG in the parts-bin is a VERY high-priced one used by Aston Martin. No SMGs in Volvo or Jaguars which are much more likely to be investing in one than Mazda is. Without one in the parts-bin, I don't see Mazda getting one. Maybe, maybe for a MazdaSpeed variant that they can purchase from someone in very limited numbers, but I don't see one on the major lineup for years to come.
Mazda/Ford makes a couple very low end cars using smg transmissions (overseas). They aren't performance oriented in any way, but they make them.

I stand corrected. But are those RWD transmissions capable of dealing with any significant power?
