1k = 9k

Reached 1000 miles on the odometer today so for the first time ever I let the engine rev until the beeper came on. Up to now, I've only allowed the engine some very occasional and brief visits to the 6k RPM area (ok, maybe 7k) and this gave a hint of what was to come. After letting it rip to 9k all I can say is, WOW! :D

Congratulations on finally popping your cherry. How does it feel to not be a virgin anymore?

Thanks for stealing my thunder!

I too reached the 1000 mile mark three days ago. Almost within the mile of hitting 1000, I wound it out to 9k redline, and shifted right after the cool little "beep".

Such a sweet sound, and what smooth acceleration. Add to that a great short throw shifter, and a tranny as smooth as butter, it makes for some really fun driving.

ok, after reading this thread; I'm a bit nervous. I've reached 9k rpm to hear the lovely 'bleep' a few times (its very addicting), and I'm at 350 miles right now. When I took the delivery, the dealer said no big 'breaking-in' rules apply since this is a simple engine (3 moving parts..blah blah); infact in both my testdrives (with another new rx-8), he let me shift at 9k rpm all the time (thats what convinced me to buy the car).

How much have I screwed the engine? What else do I have to keep in mind for breaking in the rx-8?

Thx

Don't worry, your car is fine!

/me writes down "don't ever buy a used rx-8 from anyone named davidcoulthard" in his notebook.

On a more serious note, your car isn't likely to be damaged from a few redlines.

However, you can damage your car by:

1) high rpms when the car isn't warmed up.

2) Dropping the clutch at high rpm.

#1 will get you a broken engine, #2 will trash your tranny.

Seriously, you will probably be fine. However, you might want to keep the rpms below 5k from now on....until you get to 1000 miles.

That reminds me of me at age 12, wishing I was 21.

No, but my car had fewer rock chips on the front end, and had a higher resale value with only 7 miles on it
