15,000 Mile Service

How much did you guys get your 15,000 mile service for?

I'm just curious since I was quoted a price that I thought was absurdly high. I wound up skipping it and just getting the basics...

I received a coupon in the mail for 79.99. lol

It's ridiculous. I did the whole thing myself for about ~$17.00.

It's pretty easy basic stuff. It just may take a little longer for someone without all the tools a dealership has.

IIRC, isn't 15k service just basically cleaning the air filter in addition to an oil/filter change? and then a bunch of visual inspections and whatnot.... the big one is 30k, where the spark plugs are also to be changed.

Ok, I'm pretty sure the guy tried to rip me off.

He tried charging me $207 for it. I was like "HELL NO".

look up your owner's manual, you'd be amazed how *simple* the 'required' 15k maintenance on the 8 actually is...

yeah, i think the most challenging aspect of 15k mile service would be the cabin air filter.

Actually, 30k is similar to the 15k service, they just inspect a few more things and clean the Air filter. Air filter and spark plugs are replaces at 37.5k miles.

worst that could happen is you get more pollen in your cabin and such whenever you turn on your AC. Oh yeah, it smells real bad...

My cabin air filter was NASTY when I had mine done. I wouldn't wait too long over the recommended schedule.

I hope for your sake that you don't drive that car like it was intended to be driven then. Let's see: more frequent oil changes for a few dollars more....or a new engine? hmmmm.
I see problems down the road for you. But to each his own, I guess.

EDIT: btw, how many miles do you have on your Rx-8?

if it's good enough for Racing Beat and Mazda, its good enough for me.

The Mazda RX-8 Owners Manual indicates that the engine oil and oil filter be changed every six (6) months or every 7500 miles, whichever comes first. Racing Beat supports this recommendation.

I guess that I'm **** about this kind of thing and like having some peace of mind. I'm just afraid of having the oil that stays in the oil coolers and oil lines being recycled so much that it will cause problems. That's all.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks this way.

Cabin air filter replacement is a 5-10 minute job. There's a thread with photos in the DIY forum under "Technical". Isn't this service specified at 2 years or 24,000 miles?

I have 22000 miles on my car. Drive about 2wice a week, 4000 miles in 6 months and have changed oil twice within that time. I have checked my oil couple timesmand it's always full...lol...Don't check like every 1000 miles as most people do but oh well...would try to.

The guy I bought the car from advertized "Does not use OIL" - that was cool. and I think he is right even though it's Rotary. Won't let the engine crap out on me though.

Is there any fresh air in the cabin? Check the O2 level, then get this done ASAP!!!

(Actually, yeah, I didn't do this until about 40,000 miles. I recommend you use the aldehyde filter when you do change it. More expense, but you only change this every couple years.)

Yeah. Actually he wrote "209.99" for the estimate and gave me the sheet to sign. I was like "209?! whoa. um, I'd just like the oil change and tire rotation." Then he asked if I would still be interested if they knocked 20 dollars off. I said "no."

I'll just do the air filter come 30K if I keep my car.

I've read that, too. But I'm uncomfortable with it, and sleep better at night changing every 3-4,000. Most users on this forum seem to think so, too.

I just called the dealership that I purchased my 2004 RX-8 from and asked how much the 15K service is... $270!!

I asked him to list what is done and fuel filter and fuel injector service were a huge part of the cost. I brought it to his attention that the owners manual specifies 100K for fuel filter replacement. He gave me some crap about the weather in the NW and the kind of fuel we get here.

I asked how much it would be to just do what is specified in the owners manual. Of course he didn't know what the owners manual said and had to ask me. I listed it off and he told me $58.

I know it's simple stuff that I could do myself, but I want scheduled services stamped in my warranty book.

Bottom line, if you're quoted some rediculous amount for 15K service, ask them to do just what is listed in the owners manual and you may be able to get a much cheaper price.
