140 in a race with an Acura Integra. The Integra (not stock) was fast but I took him.
The fastest I've every been is 155 on my motorcycle. I got pulled over when I got stuck in trafic. The Georgia State Patrol officer was cool about the whole thing and gave me a warning. He said he clocked me at 135. He then pulled a helmet out of his trunk and tried to sell it to me. Pretty lucky that time.

The reason Germany has less accidents is NOT because they have no speed limits. The reason is that they have drivers that have to do more than a parallel park and a drive around the block to get a license. Plus gas/licensing are a lot more expensive there. If we removed speed limits here without increasing driver training it would be a frigging disaster.

This very true! It cost an average DM2000 just for the school which is required and govt regulated. Then you have to pass the test both 150 (?) question written and then the driving test. In order to get my USAREUR (POV) drivers licence I had to take a 65 question test on road signs and another 100 question test on driving (right-of-way) laws.

What happened, were you towed/arrested or just ticketed, how much?
Many years ago, I was driving my 1st gen at 120MPH in Hayward Ca, got pulled over by a cop saying I was doing 130. Ended up spending the night in jail, and was written up for a reckless. When I went to court, the judge was retiring the next day, changed it to a speeding ticket. I went to traffic school for a day, paid no ticket, and got no points.

I lucked out big time.

Everytime I have gotten a ticket (4 times now and should be a lot more) It has allways been for the same thing... It was allways 17 mph over posted speed. Needless to say I never drive exactly 17 over limit anymore... havent got a ticket since.

Limiter on AT?

On I-15 between Las Vegas and Baker, I topped out at 125mph on a straight flat section of road. At a long downgrade, the needle still topped out at 125mph. I suspect my car has some kind speed limiter on it.

BTW, the RX-8 feels very stable and smooth at high speeds. On my old Dodge Stealth, I'd get nervous at 110mph, with the steering and ride feeling unstable, like I was barely in control.

I did 125 mph last night in my completely stock Protege5. It might be able to do one or two more mph but not much more. I let off the gas when some cross wind tried to push me to the side...

I did 142 in my modded 88 Mitsubishi Starion, 130mph when it was stock. Got my old 95 Golf up to 115mph, and the rx8, I am still breaking in, but those days of me driving those kind of speeds are long overwith. OK maybe maybe not, I might have to try it once.

going too fast is realtive! going 200 mph or more when driving from Boise to Portland is on most parts of the highway totaly safe (probably safer then going 65 mph, which makes you fall asleep).

On your picture it is very unsafe to go any faster then the flow of traffic.

So please, don't generalize speed limits. It always depends on these factors:

road conditions
road construction
traffic
your car
weather conditions

These factors should determine the "safe" speed limit, which can be anything between 0 mph (in a traffic jam) up to no speed limit at all (100 miles highway going straight without any curves and with NO traffic).

That accident happened at 3AM when there were no cars on the 5 lane freeway. That picture is of morning rush hour traffic. I don't care if you speed, you do what you like. Everyone who ultimately loses their life in an accident like this thinks they are larger than life and knows better than anyone else.

Maybe you're a great driver and this could never happen to you...good for you. But when it does happen it's too late...I'm sure if you could ask those guys who were speeding/racing if they wish they hadn't been they'd wish they were driving slower. Too late.

There will always be people who will overestimate their skills. Not just with cars. But that does not justify you to generalize.

If there were no cars on the freeway then why did they hit the truck. Its like driving in the desert and hitting the only cactus plant.

It is obvious that they were not paying attention to the road ahead and may have been looking at each other to see who would blink first!

If you look at that picture, there is a "zipper lane" that opens in the morning for use by high occupancy vehicles. The "only cactus plant" was inspecting the inner most lane (which it does every morning) of the freeway where the zipper lane opens into.

The freeway also falls off slightly there as you can see and is bending to the right. According to the papers here the first car slammed into the back of the truck causing the gas tank to explode, the 2nd car slammed into the back of the 1st car. These were soldiers heading back to base so they probably knew each other rather than it being a random street race.

I'm guessing they were sort of playing follow the leader racing so they very well could have been speeding in the same lane which is why the 2nd car wasn't able to avoid the wreck.

What is ridiculous now is the father of one of men driving the one of the speeding Eclipses is questioning whether the city vehicle was properly lit implying that was the cause or contributed to the accident. Witnesses have said the 2 vehicles were racing when they sped past other cars on the freeway just before the crash.

Here is the worst story ever... I was testing my friends 350Z out because he was about to sell it so i was doing a little over 130 on the highway. This Monte Carlo starred at me at the light before.. i figured he wanted to race (I dont race) and while i was testing it out he was coming up behind me while i was over 130 i didnt want to race so i exited the highway i was testing it on. It turned out the the monte carlo was a undercover cop and ticketed me for 125 in a 45 (speed limit of the access road) I went to court for it and simply told them the truth that i was testing the car out and she let me off with a simple fine. But it was expensive for me ... a good $800.00
