So I decided to ignore all the suggestions posted on my oil in the trunk thread and just never store oil in the trunk. Sure enough the one time I do the ******* piece of **** gtx container leaks oil into my trunk on my nice tarp and backup floor mats. I soaked most of it up but now my trunk is useless for just about anything. Can someone give me some ideas for cleaning up the carpet. Is my tarp salvagable?

 

I always keep mine in the center plastic thing in the back/trunk. If it spills it's easy to clean.
When you take out the carpet to clean it check your rubber plugs at the bottom and inspect the wires and seals while your at it.

 

What cleaning products are safe for the felt? Thanks btw

bhahah, i tie my oil to the place where the tire repair kit goes, that and a bottle of premix, never moved from that spot.

 

HD carpet cleaner. I would soak it with HE laudry soap (HE=less bubbles) then go to town with a towel and scrubber and spray the hell out of it with the carpet cleaner.
The foam crap might fall off/ just use carpet padding and silicone for replacement, or pro killsound foam.

That happened to me before. and it was castrol GTX. There containers must sucks.

For some reason my trunk leaks. If I touch the bottom of the trunk its always wet in that little drop down compartment.

 

APC such as simple green, lots of water, shop-vac. Just keep pouring the simple green and water onto the carpet, scrub, suck it up with the shop-vac. Repeat the process a few times.

 

^ gota say, that simple green is good ****, haven't found a better one (like the orange **** they have in home depot)

 

RESOLVE Carpet cleaner...did that one time but with premix...huge blue mess lol....it was about a qt of oil.....alot of towels/rags and some resolve took care of it

 

Exactly! Plenty of room on that strap for two bottles of oil.

 

Kirkland (Costco) APC/MPC works the same. I prefer buying a gallon jug of Kirkland APC over Simple Green.

 

I keep mu oil and premix quart tied up with the er road side kit.

I had exactly this happen to me except the oil bottle was up high in the boot and half went into the boot area and the other half went down behind the driver's side passenger seat pooling under the seat. It was a right mess with a heck of a lot of oil running around in there.

In the end, I bought a new carpet for the boot space as I couldn't clean the mess out properly no matter how hard I tried. The end result is brand new boot with no mess.

I had a car grooming company try to get the oil out of the seat squab(?) and they got MOST of it. That foam is super dense and there's still a bit left in there but it's ok to sit on. Of course I'm 6'6" so people rarely if ever sit in that seat.

I have been carrying a small bottle of oil in recent times but I've learn't to carry it clipped into the flat tyre inflation kit straps - seems very secure in there.

 

Ok I went with the simple green stuff. I got alot of it up but its still a little greasy. Best I can do for now I suppose. At least it looks ok and now my trunk smells like simplegreen as opposed to oil which is a nice change :-p

I think my tarp is ruined though. It has a big green stain on it and I can't get the oil out even with 1:1 simple green. kind of a shame :-(. Once I move to cali I'll leave it outside to get rained on and see if it clears up any.

That sux, I had my GTX oil container in the trunk laying on it's back for months without a single issue. If the cap is on tight not sure how it can just start leaking on its own. Then I placed it up snug in place by the windshield wiper fluid container and it holds itself in place.

 

That's what I thought - lid's on tight - all safe. Only it wasn't - for some reason despite the lid being fully and tightly closed the bottle didn't seal properly and oil being oil it soon found its way out *everywhere*.

 

i had the same thing happen just took the carpet out and jet washed it
let it dry and all is good

 

Happened to me to, I had my rear seat floor mats in my trunk and they absorbed most of the oil, but now those things are trash. I tried soaking them in soapy water and scrubbing them but that only made it worse the oil foamed up lol. I to had the oil cap on tight enough and somehow it came off. I just keep it in that little plastic bin now behind the rear seats in the middle.

 

at least it was in the trunk.

 

If the mess that's still left bothers you, find out how much it costs for a new, replacement mat from Mazda. Might be less than you think. Also maybe Mazmart has one in great condition from a wreck. Check 'em out.

 

That's what happend to me but I got redline mt90 on my drivers side carpet some carpet cleaner think it was woolite worked like a charm.
