The simple fact is the 8 makes incredibly tasty cheese sandwiches, if you want better, you have to upgrade to the turbo.
With equal drivers the Eclipse should lose to the rx8 because it is so heavy. Now, if the rx8 driver has eaten a lot of cheese sandwiches, all bets are off. If the race isn't in a straight line, even the cheese sandwiche eating rx8 driver wins. Besides that, in a cheese sandwhich cookoff, the rx8 wins because it throws off more heat. Tastes great and goes fast too!

not arguing, just proposing...
I also wonder why you care if you can beat the Eclipse. It's not your race to win. Leave him for the boy racers in their Civics or, better, a Neon SRT-4. To me, the Rx-8 is more about the driving experience; your connection to a lonely twisty road or a brisk peppy sprint through the canyons. To me, the Rx-8 is more about the driver/car relationship and testing one's technical abilities.
Speaking of Elipsai (plural for Eclipse), that new '06 model is so not a sports car! Sure, it has a fast engine (but so does my '73 Road Runner), but it wasn't built to handle at all... What ever happened to the AWD? Guess it's better to compromise and the price reflects it. Yet for some reason, it's still considered a "sports car". It's pretty, I'll give you that, but seems to lack a styling maturity. It seems excess for the sake of excess, like the proverbial "stripper" look (augmented body parts, anorexic, bleached hair). No, give me the sophistication and maturity of Catherine Zeta Jones. Give me the Rx-8. Function AND form...
Yeah, leave the poor Eclipse alone.

and speaking of not being built to handle, actually from what I have heard is that it torque steers almost constantly, I believe it is most commonly refered to as a deathtrap.
