04 GT car questions

Is this a good buy? I am about to buy a 2004 gt rx8 with 108k on the car and 8k on the motor for $10k. What can I do to make this motor last a long time. What oil do you use? And what is this that I hear a about revving it up to 3k before shut off? Any more helpful news I can get?

You've got a lot of reading to do, buddy. Don't buy this car without knowing what you're getting in to. Please go read all the "New Owner/Potential Owner" stickies. They will answer many of your questions.

1). It's a great car.

2.) Compression test - even on a motor at 10k miles. I'd also suggest a Vac test as they tend to get lazy with the install and you could get a leak.

3). Drive the car - if you don't LOVE it. Do not buy it. It doesn't get better with age.

4). Read some threads.

Why would you invest 10k into a car known for engine failure that has 108k; the extended engine warranty ends at 100k. Shop around much better deals around and good luck.

Recommended is 5W-20. You still could use up to 20W-50. Read the stickies on the oil thread for more info.

I read that thread, I could deal with the upkeep, it will be my 14th car. But what do I hear about revving it to 3k to reduce condensation in the engine, is that a myth?

the myth is this: If you need to move your car outside to wash it or something, make sure you bring it up to normal operating temp (180*F) before shutting it off. The car injects a lot of gas when it is cold, in order to bring engine temps up quicker. If you absolutely must shut off, rev the engine @3-4krpm for about 10 seconds to get rid of the gas.

I wouldn't worry about it. Some people live by it. Make your own choice

i've never had an issue with flooding because of not revving the engine to 3000rpm after a cold start and shut down.

i will say however, shop around and look at a few other RX-8's in your area and compare the one you are looking at with the others and weigh out the pros and cons of whether or not you feel like you are getting a good deal on a used 8.

I got mine last month for $9500 with 84k miles on it and have already pumped a bunch of money into it. New rotors and pads all around, new tires, new interior, new stereo/amp/speakers/sub, clutch, new transmission in the next few weeks, new engine soon, new paint job next month, new radiator, full headers and exhaust, access port on the way, bhr ignition kit, intake, short shifter, new master and slave cylinders and pedal assemblies with brackets, tune, etc. I plan on dropping ~$15k in the first six months and getting a turbo next year. I would say that $7-8k was required though, just keep that in mind.
