Exclamation $40,000 A/t Rx-8?!

I wasat my local Mazda dealer getting another oil change, and I was wandering the lot and showroom looking for white RX-8's. I stumbled upon a gorgeous black one with a Mazdaspeed spoiler. I noticed it also had the automatic transmission, which was disappointing. However, I did get a chance to see the 4-port RENESIS in person. I looked around to the passenger's side, and the sticker price said $40,000. What?! How is this humanly possible? What kind of accessories would make an RX-8 $40,000? BTW, the car didn't even have the appearance package, so I guess that's out of the equation.

Shelley's...

You got me? I'm baffled!! Even with all the manu upgrades the car should top out at approx $36k!!

Was it an 04 or an 05? Maybe some dealer conversion package? Maybe?

Silly question....

Why didn't you check the sticker or ask someone?

It might be a 2005, but that's still way too freakin' high. Luckily, I got mine for much less than the sticker price in October, 2003.

ha ha ... you sure it wasn't an "import" from Canada and that it still had the price in Canadian? ha ha ... even if it were in Canadian dollars it's a crappy deal!

The MS spoiler is going to add about $1300 to the price (msrp + install fees), did the car have the rest of the kit? If it doesn't, then I wouldn't know why it's 40k.

Nope. Just an MS wing. That's it. I don't think the DVD NAV, leather interior, Bose radio, and all the other amenities make up to $40,000.

There was probably a mark-up involved, but why $40,000?

Sounds like my car. GT + Navi + MS wing = $31,000.

Even with aftermarket rims, XM, and a few other things, my car isn't anywhere close to 40 grand.

Duh, it's because it's an '05, and is white, and the dealer thinks he can get that for it. The sad fact is, he probably will!

About a year ago when I was shopping for mine, one of the local dealerships had an RX8 exactly like the one I ended up buying that stickered at $36.5k (basically as fully loaded as they get), but it had the 18" polished wheels on it. They were asking almost $40k for it... which included big markups for the wheels, fender strakes, exhaust finishers, etc.

Well, it wasn't white. Might've been an '05. I don't have time to go back there and check. This tired fungineer has sleep to do, and possibly a materials lab.

Someone will probably buy this car. Is it a ripoff? Yes, but that doesn't make it any more special than anyone else's RX-8.

That does sound a bit high. I saw a white 05 yesterday. Dealer invited me to see it just after I bought an 04 a few days ago. The white bird had all the MS front ram stuff and Cat back. Great looking car. They told me the 05s are going for $400 more than the 04s. So $40 Gs sounds like it has everything in it but the kitchen sink.

If the dealer can show you a Dino reading of 350HP ... with mods ... get it.

I was turning onto a left turn lane (there were two) one day down here, and I see a titanium gray one that looks like mine but fixed up to the hilt. He had full MS bodykit, MS wing, MS Exhaust, MS Carbon Fiber B pillers, big aftermarket rims. The guys pulls up next to me lowers the window and it happens to be my cop friend. Too funny. I didn't even know he had gotten one. He asks me where I got my chrome gas lid (it's the Mazda add on). He tells me his is automatic because his wife needs to drive it. Short of a complete MS bodykit, wing, exhaust...basically everything in the catalog I cant see how this car gets to $40K.

Often people will think my car is worth a lot more than it is. They are shocked when I tell them how much I got it for. Maybe the dealer is just trying to use that to make money.

If they showed me a dyno graph, I'd raise the BS flag. Seriously, would you believe anything a dealer tells you, or what I say?

I still think it's too much for an automatic RX-8. Makes me sick.

Good thing I'm simplistic and walked away with a $26,000 base. :D

Hello all,

Shelley,

Which dealer in Houston had this price? Which dealer did you buy your car from?
