Steering column extension- 20b conversion
#1
Hi. Can someone please suggest some easy ways to extend the rx8 steering column when moving the rack forward by as few inches?? I'm doin the 20b conversion and I bought a sub frame extension kit for the rack, but tru to esmeril racing form I have been waitin a week so far for an answer. So I turn to the community, who no doubt know much more than the clowns at esmeril anyway.

Why don't you go to a mill shop and have them make you and extension? Basically on one side a female adapter with the innner grooves/splines to slip onto the original rod and on the other end a male with outer splines.

it should be easy to Frankenstein one together if you can get a hold of the knuckle and the splined portion of the shaft.
cut the knuckle so all you have is a cup with splines inside (remove the hinging portion).
then cut the splined shaft to the length you need, and weld it to the "spline cup" where the hinge portion was.
you will have what looks like a giant golf tee.

I have seen many just cut the steering rod, add material, and weld. Why not try this?
The problem with going this route on the 20b swap is the moving of these steering components forward no longer keeping it's true geometry.. Do you have pics of your swap? Would love to see it

This is as far in as I cld get it today. Rack mount on subframe was in the way, as was the sub frame itself.. Needs to drop down another 4-5 inches

Will see if I can find a column at the wreckers to mod.

I guess I just wanna do it myself, and being that I don't have a welder then I was looking for another way. So wish I had a welder ( and some welding experience) so many times lately it would make my life easier.

Oh yeh that makes sense. Thanks.
I do act blonde sometimes. Actually I asked the question before I had a chance to have a proper look n realized it's pretty straight forward.
