Aluminum Cat back

Aluminum Cat back
Guys I am currently in the process of building and testing an aluminum cat back for the RX8 and RX7. I am wondering if there is any interest in this product. The weight savings is huge over SS cat backs. The muffler alone weighs less than 2.5 lbs.
Feed back greatly appreciated.

Aluminum is seldom used as a material for exhausts, even in cases where there are huge premiums for weight savings. There are good reasons for this:

Add the fact that exhaust pulses and temperatures are more severe with rotary engines than piston and I'll guess an aluminum catback will be either cracked or semi-melted very quickly. Build it, do before/after dyno, run it for 10k miles, then get back with a product to offer. Good luck.

Thanks for the article. Fortunately I have been building exhausts for a bit and I have 5 cars to test the prototypes for some time. On top of that I stand behind all my products.
Pics next week.

I would like to see how this turns out, but I'm as interested in long-term durability as I am in weight savings. Are you planning to reinforce or internally coat the exhaust?

Jantzen come by the shop this next week and lets talk. Jim I know I'll see you soon since I have your motor so we can talk then.
RX I will not sell something that will not hold up so no worries. I am trying to keep up this week so I have not had time to upload pics yet. I will this next week.

Aluminum mufflers haven't held up well in street cars. Corrosion from road salt on the outside and emitted acids and moisture on the inside have done them in. I am skeptical, but you may be using an alloy that can withstand the environment and conditions.
The Corksport dual muffler exhaust is 27lbs. and made of stainless steel. Mine has lasted 7 yrs. now. I don't know how much lighter an aluminum exhaust, of the same configuration, could be. It's weight is the primary reason I wanted that system.

Has anyone actually measured the temps of the exhaust pipe at different points?
Based on the purple heat tint, I'm guessing my SS exhaust gets up to 850F even near the exit. Based on that article, even Ti is not suitable. Seems like Al might just outright melt.
