Private Party Sale

If I buy from a private party sale, how much does the tax payment to dmv and registration cost total up to? Is it similar to what the dealer charges or less? I think dealers TTL add up to 10-12% on a 20-25K car. THanks.

From my understanding, taxes + registration will be the same as what you would pay at the dealer. the only thing you won't have to pay is "documentation fee" to the dealer which is usually less than a 100 bucks.

does it hurt the seller to write on the bill of sale less than the amount i actually pay to lower the tax?

If it's a private party, you still have to pay CA sales tax. Probablly 7.75% if you're in Irvine.

Of course it is "illegal" for the seller to say your bought it for less to save you on tax,
but make sure you both agree to state the same price. It's not such a big deal and
I know people who have helped other people out. A victimless 'crime' if you ask me.
The government makes enough money off of you and me as it is.

if you put it too low ( like $50 ) they will appraise the car and tax you on the appraisal.
