hey guys new to the forums and might be a new owner of a used rx8
hey guys just found this place (considering this being the best place to post anything about an rx-8) and decided to post it up here.
i found a clean title, 2004 rx8 auto
72k miles
the guy im buying from is not the original owner
if it falls into my hands i would be the 4th owner??
but before u judge that hear me out
first guy bought it new -> 2nd guy bought it frmo mazda as certified preowned -> than sold it to his mechanic who hasn't drove it at all just kept it at his auto shop because the 2nd guy is moving to a different country.
the mechanic knows about rotary engine and gives me a guarantee his is in good condition. he has had it for about 2 weeks. i test drove it yesterday and it felt great.
now i'm not sure if this car is still under warranty (8yr /100k miles)considering the 2nd owner has done some modifications to the car (not exactly sure what but i can find out for you guys if it would help figure out whether the car is in warranty or not)
the mechanic says he worked on the engine himself whenever there were problems and even offered me a warranty on it (he won't be replacing the engine but for minor engine problems he'll be willing to fix it free)
just wonderinf ti you guys consider it a good buy.
the mechanic was gonna keep the car for himself but he has a 2nd kid on the way and needs to get a more family oriented vehicle (saw the kid and wife and seem like a nice family although i shouldnt let that get the better of me in a sale)
now the price we bargained down to was $6k
yea its a cheap price but im now worried that some of the repairs could cost heavy in the future.
things i'm gonna ask for:
i saw somewhere online about a compression test
and a vacuum leakdown test.
anything else i should look for??
edit: currently im 19. found this car at a good price (depending on whether the engine is in good condition or not) my parents paying for most of it (me being a college student lack funds). i have read a lot on the rotary past couple days plan on putting in some oil every other time i put in gas. only premium, oil changes every 3000 miles. nonsynthetic, not turning it on/off. plan on using it daily, and have those looong highway/freeway drivs everyonce in a while to clean clogging, etc. i've done a good amount of research and joined this forum for some more advice.
thanks

to answer some of my own questions .
compression and vacuum leakdown test has been performed and is fine.
nothing was done to the engine, i believe he replaced the exhaust only.
but nothing too much on the previous owner on when eh got his oil change and stuff so warranty might be tough -__-

the 1st owner (before certified sell)
went through all the recalls
the 2nd owner has only had the car for a year (drove about 20000 miles on it)
3rd owner hasnt touched it only had it for 2 weeks (legally he hasnt even registered the vehicle so technically i guess im the 3rd owner)
and personally i think i may be the 4th

Sounds like a really good deal. Just be sure to agree on what stuff your mechanic friend will fix and what he won't. Since it has have 72k miles, "Core Engine Components" are still under Mazda's warranty (unless some silly mods were done to it).
Also, since your parents are helping with the buy, just do it!

**1) make sure you keep all the maintanance Records if available!!!(THIS IS CRUCIAL)**
2) please post the compression numbers for your engine if you can
3) check the cat you only have 8k more miles left before your chance of replacing it for free flys out the window.
4) check the ignition coils on the car
5) MAKE SURE YOUR REMEMBER RULE #1
