Few questions while looking into buying a 04 RX-8
Hey guys first post on here. Was a member on newtiburon.com but unfortunately my tib got totaled by a guy running a red light so now I'm out looking for a new car.
I'm looking into a blue 2004 RX-8 with 56,000 miles on it. Going to look and test drive in in a few days but just had a few questions before I make any decisions.
1. Would you advice buying a used rx-8 with that many miles? I know it's not that many (my tib only had 55k before the accident), but I have heard the rotary engine is prone to dying a while after 100k.
2. This would be my first manual car. I'm still learning how to drive stick shift but may stall it a time or two getting used to this car. Will this potentially cause engine flooding?
3. I'm guessing I should buy an extended warranty on the car. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks for the info and if I get a rx-8 I look forward to using these forums more often.
Thanks again!

All of your questions have been answered previously on this forum. read the other threads in this section for more detailed answers.
1: A used 8 with 56,000 miles is not necessarily bad. Have a compression test run on the engine at a Mazda Dealer to ensure the seals are not worn to crap.
2: My 8 was also my first manual vehicle. I got as much practice time as I could in on others before making the jump. No problems with it so far although I did stall it a couple times while getting used to it. take it slow at first and you'll be fine.
3+1: there's an 8-year 100k mile warranty from Mazda on the engine core. if the engine fails it can be replaced under warranty (will still cost you some cash for non-reusable components) If you're not good with cars otherwise, you may want to look in to some sort of dealer warranty for peace of mind. that's totally dependent on you though.
I would suggest using these forums very thoroughly before jumping in. make sure you know what you're getting into. The 8 is somewhat infamous for being unreliable, but if you know how and are willing to properly take care of it, it's just as good as any other.

Yea it's not the rotary engine it's just the Renesis Series 1 that are failing. My 84 RX7 is still being driven by the guy I sold it to, original engine, so 26 years old and no compression issue (example). Just saying rotary is not the problem it's an engineering issue with the clearances, components and poor 5-20 weak * lame thin oil idea. Whoever came up with that need to apologize in shame to Mazda and change it to 5-30 or thicker lol.
