Expensive insurance

I checked with my insurance carrier before I bought my 8 so I was well aware that the coverage was going to be relatively high. Although it's about $400.00 a year cheaper than a Mustang, it's still double what my '02 Ford Exploder costs. Both my wife and I have perfect driving records, yet this high cost. My carrier classifies the 8 (and the Mustang) as "unexceptable risks" and classifies both has "high performance" vehicles. I can't argue with the "high performance" classification, but when they said they would make an "exception" because of my excellent driving record I thought, "oh gee, thanks" (sarcasm). My carrier doesn't seem to care that the 8 has 4 doors, 4 seats, lots of airbags and a very good crash safety rating. I've read elsewhere on this forum that some owners believe that having 4 doors and 4 seats lowers the insurance rate. If this is true, it must not be much (???)

I go through State Farm and pay $80 a month.

State Farm doesnt classify the 8 as a sports car, where as I know Allstate does. Allstate wanted $140 for premiums.

Shop around.

Oh, and theres been a ton of threads on this, search around and you'll find alot more info.

Sounds like a bad insurance company. I was in an 04 Pontiac Grand AM and I too checked the insurance costs and it only went up about $7 a month because the car is worth more. I would get on line and get insurance quotes. Sounds like they are ripping you off. I don't consider and RX a high performance car or even a race car and its not a Mustang. Mustangs and GTOs can be high HP off the line cars and have that reputation. I think someone at your insurance company just took you.

I got quoted for $4,915 a year from Liberty Mutual here in NYC... $8200 from Progressive... this is all for comprehensive insurance... What exactly constitutes "expensive" for you?

I go through State Farm and pay $80 a month.
You have my undying hatred and envy. :p

Depends on y our insurance company, I was getting quotes and with state farm, the Rx8's insurance is less than a TSX, RSX, TL, G35/C, 350Z, Mustang, and a whole lot of other cars.

I pay 2100 Year - FOR 3 CARS!!!!!

2001 Grand Cherokee
2003 MP5
2004 RX-8

$4200/yr is Horrendous even with a not so clean record...

As for 280/Mo from State Farm - they suck all the money they can out of you - I would shop around...

Farmers Insurance. That is the way to go... Awesome coverage and claims handling. You even get a phone number for a REAL person... Go figure...

uh state farm rules i pay 107.83 a month (1293 a year) in philadelphia and im a 23 year old male. ive been in not at fault accidents as well...when i went online and put in all my info they and other companies were quoting me 2400 3600 and such a year. I talked to a local state farm agent and we went over my record and stuff and my family (who uses state farm) and he was able to cut my expected premium in half. They love their customers.

NY? man that gives me a headache seeing those insur rates!! all is high there including property taxes. Makes me wonder why I would ever want to live there. Feel for those folks who pay that sort of insurance costs.

Hey 1.3L,

In CA, you might want to try Mercury. When I got the quote before buying my 8, it came in at $10/month less than the same coverage for a 4x4 Tacoma. I just paid a little over $500 for 6 months of full coverage in OC (15 years driving, clean record, and discount for being an engineer).

Damn, you can get a discount for being an engineer? I'm an engineer, but no one will hire me AS an engineer. They just want me for my math skills... Lousy city job...

1300 per year is about right for a 23 yr old.

I only pay 500 a year. Full coverage and ten times higher coverage for liability.

It was cheaper than my V6 GT Eclispe!

Some companies will do a discount for just having a degree in engineering.

Also, don't get too upset over r8ped8's premiums. Keep in mind that Spokane, WA is a city of (maybe) 200-250,000 people, and the next significant cities are Seattle (300 miles away), Portland (350-400 miles away) and Salt Lake City (500-600 miles away). You'll generally find heavier traffic at 10:30 PM in L.A. or NYC than at "rush hour" where r8ped8 lives.

I went to High School in Missoula, MT (population ~70k, 2nd or 3rd biggest town in the state), and had premiums of probably <$50/month at 16 years old. (and we used to drive to Spokanne to see the city....)

The RX-8 with 150k/300k full coverage, uninsured motorist, PIP and everything else you can think of costs $500/6months with Amex insurance.

To give you an idea about my other cars, the RX-8 with full coverage costs LESS than my mustang convertable with only liability.

The RX-8 costs slightly less (~$50) than the same coverage on a 2000 Saturn.

Being 22, male, single, living in NYC and not working as an engineer sucks. Reading this thread makes me want to cry. On the plus side, GEICO quoted me at 2700 for some pretty decent, though not maxed out, comprehensive insurance. I think I'll take that, I have no other choice. :p

Try GE Auto Insurance Program (1-800-523-1700) I pay $467.50 a YEAR for full coverage. They do not consider the 8 a sports car. That suits me just fine. I was paying $26.00 more a year for my 1989 Corolla SR5. My deductible for collision is $250. and for comprehensive it is $100.00.

$85 a month with State Farm, although when I asked them, they do classify it as a sports car here. The also got very confused about the rotary engine thing, kept asking if it was a 4 cylinder, I told her if she had to put that in the computer and it made my insurance go down...sure. She said, nope...it actually made the insurance go up if it was listed as a 4 cylinder.
