Excessive miles on a NEW? RX-8

Hi all I just got my "New" RX-8 home and noticed that it had 534 miles on it?? This seems a little excessive as I only drove it 20 miles tops.

I didn't realize it because I was reading the Tripmeter which read 73 miles so I thought I had 73 miles!

So with 500+ miles is it considered used? I live in California so does anyone know what the DMV defines as "NEW"

Should I try and go back to get a newer one? (might not get the options or color I want) or should I ask them to knock of like $1500? I car appears to be like new, and they sold it to me as new (kind of shady if you ask me).

Any advise is greatly appreciated?

You should check the papers you signed when closing the deal on your car. You probably signed a paper ackowledging the mileage on the car at the time of delivery. In Florida, it's the law. I'm not sure about California.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a new car with 500+ miles on it. You know as well as I do, there were at LEAST a couple times where the car was test driven to "see what this baby can do."

My .02

p.s. Check your state laws. There's also a grace period where you can take your car back.

There is nothing you can do once you sign the papers.

there is no grace period for returning non-lemon cars, this isn't Wal-Mart

The car is under warranty, don't believe the "X miles and probably driven hard" crap...it's covered anyhow, and those few miles aren't going to affect the car at 40,000+ miles.

That sounds like something a salesman would say...I do recall some instances where that is a law in some states I've lived in...

In FL, I think they can sell demo cars up to 4500 miles as new. But you'll have to look it up in your state to see what the rules are.

With only 500 miles, I doubt you can do much.

Milage...

Agree with Jason, doubt you can do much... I've lived in CA before too and can say you definitely should've seen the milage on the odometer report. It's a law there. Maybe you were just excited about getting the RX-8 and wanted to drive rather than sign papers!! ;-)

Anyay, wouldn't be overly concerned about it to be honest. Just my .02...

It's entirely possible that the car was driven up from another dealership on dealer trade, in which case most of those miles are likely to be highway miles. This happens all the time in Texas. A Dallas dealer will have a customer wanting a blue car, and will trade a Houston dealer for one. If they have somebody going to Dallas, anyway, the Houston dealer will just have someone drive it up to Dallas and avoid paying the transport fee.

I wouldn't sweat it. You may want to keep a copy of your purchase papers showing the mileage in case any "early" warranty issues (clutch, brake pads, diff, etc) come up. It would be useful evidence if Mazda tried to give you crap about normal wear and tear.

California does not have a cooling off period, but there is one currently under consideration in Sacramento. DMV defines a new vehicle as any vehicle delivered from the manufacturer to a dealer that has never been registered (a 2003 that has never been registered will be sold as new). Demo vehicles must be disclosed as such at time of sale by having the buyer sign a demo certification form (but they are still reported on a New Report of Sale to DMV). On the contract you signed (the really long one that took 10 signatures/initials) your mileage will be shown. It should match the amount on your odometer when you took possession of the car. If it does not, and not too much time has passed, you may be able to apply some pressure to the dealer, but I doubt you will get more than an offer for something free (oil change, user manual etc). If it was disclosed, you don't have any recourse. The mileage amount must be manually adjusted in the computer system by the dealer when they print the paperwork. It is not uncommon for them to miss it. I really wouldn't trip off of the mileage, as was mentioned before the warranty is still intact. Also, dealer trades are very common on this car here in Cali and there is no telling where it came from (unless there was another dealers temporary plate on the car). Bottom line.....you have an 8....you should enjoy It !!

What would it cost to transport the car on truck?

500 miles at $2 per gal = $1,000. Not exactly something a dealership would want to undertake without making sure the buyer would sign the dotted line.

"500 miles at $2 per gal = $1,000" only if you get one mile per gallon. Most RX8s are doing a little better than that on the highway.

What is the bill of sale stating for the milleage? But I really wouldn't make a big deal out of unless they say that there were no miles on it. Either way welcome to the club.

Thanks guys The mileage was on the invoice, but like you all said I was too excited to get the car. Anyway, I just had bad thoughts... cause I know when I demoed the RX-8... rev to 5k and drop the clutch... weee

The only other thing that I was kind of upset about was it looked like the car was sitting around for a while. I would run my fingers through the paint and I could feel the oxidation... I asked them to detail it, but it looked like they just ran it through a car wash. I clay barred/NXTed and now it's all good.

Thanks for the advice... I'm not gona sweat the miles, and since I've had the RX-8 and put 1000 of my own miles, I just gota say I LOVE THIS CAR
