depreciation help????????

I'm not sure if these figures change or not so I thought I would start a new thread. I'm curious what the depreciation of an rx8 is over a period of 2,3, and 4 years. Thanks.

The 3 year residual value on the RX8 was 54% if I remember correctly - about $17,000.

irq9,

Where can I find more information like this. I would like some concrete numbers when I go into he dealer so they cannot say, "thoses numbers are not acurate." Sites like ALG say the 8 holds its value well (as well as bmw in fact) but fail to give actual numbers

I'm just giving you my numbers, which they pulled out of some mysterious finance book. I'm sure you can find a similar book if you look hard enough.

Hit a couple dealers and see if they come to you with the same numbers. You really have to take their word for it, since no one's owned a RX-8 for 3 or 4 years. Also, everyone at the dealership assured me I'd be able to sell it for $20,000 in 3 years, about $2500 more than they quoted me for the residual.

Problem is, dealer's don't want to part with this information until you are well within the process.

If you really want to know the residual values, check out thsi link. The software isn't too expensive. They use Black Book residual values as opposed to ALG. All lending institutions use one or the other.

Back in 97 when I leased my Expedetion and in 99 when I leased my Boxster, the 48 month residuals were both 60%. Incredible. Back then everyone I knew said leasing was crazy. For me with those residuals, it made perfect sense. Of course now with cash back's so high, the resale market is falling and lease residuals as well.

I purchsed the software with a data set that originated back when I purchased my "8". That was late Nov. So this stuff is a little old, but I did pull some numbers of interest. Of note - the 350Z numbers listed are the lowest and at least one trim line was 5 points higher at all points! I've never seen that much variation between trim levels before. Hope this helps.

Edmunds.com

edmunds.com includes depreciation under the heading of True Cost to Own, but I cannot say how accurate it is.

Sorry I did miss (at least) one thing on my post on depreciations. Those percentages are for 15,000 miles per year.

bowman,

Good find. I use Edmunds all the time but never really look at the total cost of ownership stuff. But from what I read they seem to use their TMV value for the depreciation. Not exactly the same stuff that lenders woudl use, but could be close.

Edit - Just checked the percentages for the RX-8. For the years I posetd above it had 82%, 72%, 64% and 57%. I sure would prefer those numbers. They must be doing retail with the TMV compared to the Black Book doing wholesale. They are working from 15K miles a year too.

I found out the residual values of an 8, msrp of roughly 31k, will be $15120 after 4 years and 48k miles. Now these are the numbers that banks have mysteriously come up with for leasing purposes...not sure if this reflects actual market values.
