Demo Car??

My question is how many miles does a 2005 Mazda Rx have to have untill its considered a Demo Car and is there some type of Law stating this? B/c I went to the dealership yesterday and we were so close to getting my Black Rx8 until they began to dick us around. Anyways, our salesman had told us from the start that the car I wanted was 30,000. So as soon as we stepped into his office he came back w/ his numbers and as we reached in to look.......the car costed 33,700 . We asked him why he changed the price and he had told us that he didnt change the price and that this is how much the mazda rx8 sticker read as and he wasnt sure about the price beforehand (TRICKY bastard). He showed us the Sticker and we were like oh ok hes right . Well that sticker he showed us was when the car was Brand new, and the car by now had around 4,500 miles and one of the other salesman had told us before that this mazda was a Demo. Well we argued and argued but they still werent willing to negotiate, it turned out that They were trying to rip us off by giving us payments of about 700-850 a month.....AND thats with 5,000 down payment And a Trade in Vehicle!! We argued our point about the Demo and the price should be reduced once it has miles on it, but the excuses they told us were Texas Law.....(dont really remember what he said I was pissed) and that it ranges from dealership to dealership. I dont know why they tried to give us a hard time, we really wanted to buy this car, whatever happened to dealerships trying to help ppl get their car.

This dealer is jerking you around. Go somewhere else. When a vehicle can no longer be sold new is a matter of state law, but you can rest assured that 4500 miles is considered used no matter where you are. 700-800 a month after 5k down AND a trade in? Even if your trade in is a POS that sounds like rape to me.

They gave you a hard time because they could tell you really wanted to buy the car, and they were hoping to exploit your feelings into a better deal for themselves.
Even though the car has 4500 miles, to them it's still considered "new" because it has been titled to another purchaser. To you it's considered a "demo" because of the mileage. If they insist on pricing it as a new car, you should walk away. They should certainly be willing to give you more of a discount on this car than a brand new one with no miles.
There are plenty of 8s waiting to be sold at dealerships around the country. If it doesn't sound like a good deal to you, it's not. Go find another dealer who'll treat you more fairly.

definatly walk away.. I'd rather buy a lease return or a (truely) used RX-8 then a demo and get raped by a dealer like that.

that monthly payment is way too high for 33k. my term is 6 years, 26k, and my payment is under 430 month.

definately walk away. unless your term was 3 years, your payments shoud be no where near that.

go to your bank or credit union, get preapproved for a loan that you are comfortable with, so you know where u are at there, you know what you are putting for a down payment, so you have that covered. find out what your trade in is worth, then figure that the stealership is only gonna give you 75%.

now you go to the dealer and deal on total price of vehicle out the door, make sure you tell them that you do not need financing. now they cant try to work you on anyting, not loan term, percentage rate, monthly payment, or anything else. dont even mention trade in until you have your final price IN WRITING. once you have that, bring up the trade in, your down payment and your good to go.

thats the best advice i can give you

To echo what everyone else is saying, just take it slow and be patient. You'll find your perfect car at the perfect price. You need to stop going to the dealerships until you're ready to sign papers. Actually the only reason to visit the dealership is to test drive the car and to sign the purchase papers after you've agreed on a price. Also, arm yourself with a loan before you go there (and don't fall for the extended warranty scams). Get a list of all the dealerships in your area and send them quote requests for _exactly_ what you want. Decide on a price that you are willing to pay and stick by it. The worst thing you can do is shop for a new car by going to the dealerships and trying to negotiate with professional car salesmen. Like a previous poster said, they will work on your emotions of the new-car fever.

In Ohio, once a car has 500 miles, it cannot be titled as new. After that, it is a demo, and should not command a new-car price.

If you want a used 8, look in the forums here where you can find one with a known pedigree and a lower price (probably by $10K). I bought a demo once and will never do so again. You have no way of knowing how the car has been driven, and have a pretty good idea that it has not been driven in a low-key manner. Just about everyone who test drives an 8 wants to see what it can do, and the salemen were glad to oblige. Redline for everyone all the time. No break-in period. I bought mine with 3 miles on it for good reason.

the only way that car is considered used is if it had a title of ownership. demo's don't count as used cars, so they can technically sell it as a brand new car. either way, they don't deserve your business...go somewhere else that is willing to help you out.

If you are going to get financing outside of the dealership, I wouldn't tell them that until you have their lowest price. They will not make as much money if they don't get your loan, so they are likely to not negotiate as much on the price of the car. I haven't been that good of a vehicle negotiator in the past, but when I purchased this car, I told my salesman that I was willing to pay X amount of dollars for the car, and I didn't care what he had to do to get it there, but I was leaving if he couldn't do it. When they came back with two higher offers, I just immediately said no and they finally gave me what I wanted. It sucks that we have to play these games to get a car, but I guess a few hours at the dealership is worth getting what you want.

You can argue all day whether a car with 4,500 miles can be called a "demo" or not. Fact of the matter is the car is used and has no business being priced as new (or higher).

I was told from several dealer in the area that as long as it is not titled and has less then 6000 miles it is considered new. Go figure. I would not buy it.

And never tell a dealer what you want for a monthly payment or how high you are willing to pay. When they ask me that I tell them one dollar for both. They get the point quickly.

I looked into this yesterday, because someone on another thread said their new car had 600 miles, but couldn't find the federal law concerning the exact mileage to consider a car new.

A friend at work bought a brand new Mustang from the factory and told the dealer he wouldn't accept it, as new, if it had more than 5 miles on it according to federal law.

Not sure if this is true or not, but they made sure it didn't have over 5 miles on it when he took possession.
