04 with 32000 miles

this time I'm pretty serious about the car, it's an 04 manual in blue with 32,000 miles on the clock for a listed price of 18, but I won't pay a penny over 16 with fees and taxes included. It's a sport model with no extras (which is really ok with me)

this is the car right here linked

nice fender strakes and nose chrome altho I don't like the rear spoiler, can it be removed without leaving holes?

So my actual question is, am I overpaying by going for 16 out the door? it seems like a good deal altho I haven't seen in it person, I'll be seeing it and driving it sunday.

I'm not sure the exact tax rate in CA, but assuming that is roughly $1500 that is a fair and reasonable offer that should be accepted without too much hassle.

So I went and test drove it, they want 18 plus taxes and fees for it, I told them I'd think about it for a few days and see what I could come up with in terms of financing.

the car comes with 8 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and is fully certified since a mazda dealer is selling it.

it is the sport package so it does have traction control and it's the color I want, and the engine runs oh so smoothly, better than any other I've test driven so far. It also has the 19 inch rims and brand new cooper brand tires which I've never heard of, but anything is better than the potenzas. The fender strakes are there and I like them

On the downside the paint has a few chips in the doors that have been patched up with paint, they don't stick out but they're still there, the front chrome highlight looks horrible and the clearcoat is peeling off of it all along the top edge, it also has the chrome gas cap door which I think looks tacky and a rear spoiler which I don't like either.

So what tips can you guys give me to haggle with them? I'm prepared to offer them up to 17,000 out the door with their financing or 17500 with my financing. I feel that 17 is the best deal I could get. I'd appreciate your thoughts

Yeah, anything's better than the Potenzas. Which "expert" here told you that?

Point out the cars obvious flaws (ones u mentioned above) and give them your bottom dollar price---$17.5K out the door or you fu**in walk. Simple as that. If they think they can get some sucker to pay 19.5 OTD (taxes/fees incl) then God help them. If they say no, be sure they have ur #, tell em to call if they change their minds and walk out. No one is going to pay that much for it and with it being winter, the odds are even greater that they wont be getting alot of lookers anytime soon. 10-1 says they call you back within a week or so, if nothing a counter offer. If not, so what? Keep shoppin around, plenty of 8's out there. GL

Copper is a good brand, but I have to say dont even compare their stuff to Bridgestone's stuff. different level.

For the car, tell them 16 or you walk. let it sit for a while.

Browning is a good dealer and has good service.

Just keep haggling with them.

In 15 days it's another year older.

one more bigger question before I start calling the dealer and making deals..

I asked my local credit union what rates they would give me, they gave me a base of 50 payments at $309 each for a loan for 16000 with no downpayment, the dealership comes out and gives me payments of $422 at 60 payments for financing for an 18000 price plus taxes and fees and a 1500 downpayment, the difference just seems amazingly big and I just wonder where I'm getting screwed here.

are "option financing deals" worth it? they offered me that about 3 times where you can change your financing deal within 10 days after you buy.

I'd be willing to finance thru the dealer if they drop the price to under 17 out the door just to make them a bit more money in the sake of fairness. How much do you think they paid for the car on trade-in and what kind of payments should I be willing to go for? I don't want to pay more than 400 a month and hopefully less. any more help would be much appreciated. How much does a dealership normally make if the customer isn't a complete sucker?

not sure if it'll still be there, blue is a very hard color to find around here. I'll see what I can talk them down to, in the meantime any input on payments and haggling right now would be sweet.

what ? 422 for 60 months PLUS 1500 ?!?!?!?!?! thats like over 26 K!!! wtf

what kind of % they're giving you ?

Tell me the %, and how do they even come up with that kind of number ?

all dealership assumes that buyers are suckers. the only way to scared them off is you have to know what you're doing before you step into the dealership.

My dealership thought I was a sucker. First time I got my Rx-8, Shinka, 28K out the door brand new. Trying to put **** on my car I put a no to all of them.

month something ago, same dealership, diff sales of course (the dude who got me the car got fired cuz of me, LOL), trying to rip me off again, cuz I know what Im doing, I forced them to give me a Brand new just came *off the boat* Fully loaded (Everything, EVERYTHING) CX-7 @ 29K, they're trying to screw me over again @ the financing, they have a promotion that time @ 1.9% for 36 months(now its 0 ... but whatever), they tried to give me bullshit like my father(he is buying actually, not my car) does not have good credit I was like yeah sure my father is a business owner buddy, and there is a promotion @ mazda for 1.9%, he keep on saying theres no special promotion, then I was like you will give me that %, or I walk. Simple. then he was pissed and made some call and sign everything then we left, he didnt even say Thanks.

So, you gotta know what you're doing buddy. Keep this in mind, its YOUR money, its STILL in your pocket, dont feel sorry when they give you the *look*, cuz what they're trying to do is get that money out of your pocket and put it in theirs. so spend it WISELY, dont rush into any deals.

why don't you hold your tongue if you don't have anything helpful to say? I'm not going to pay their bullshit payments knowing the kind of deal I can get at the credit union, I'm not an idiot so don't treat me like one. I'm asking for helpful advice not useless comments.

And thank you guys for the help so far. I think they told me the interest rate was 7.9 instead of 5.95 which the credit union offers me and said no way they could match it. But that has to be a lie given the insane payment options I was given. Of course they kept trying to get me to buy the car then and there and drive away in it at that price.

Thinking of it, the option deal doesn't sound very good to me either, probably a way to screw ppl with bad credit (I'm not one of them) who have no chance at getting financing anywhere else.

Dude, I am trying to be helpful. Sounds like you are letting yourself get worked around on EVERY level. Don't convince yourself that you have to take that car because it is one color over another. Go in with one price, have a preset high line and walk out if they dont meet you. I negotiated for over an entire day for my last car (over the phone, but hey, it was out of state) and I gave up when they wouldnt give me what I wanted. I hung up and said "sorry, good-bye". Heck, I was already looking for another car on the intrawebs. An hour later (and a half hour after they "closed" I got a call back and they gave me the price that they walked away from and hour earlier. I got a decent price and they got rid of a car. There are LOTS of blue RX8s out there. Dont get suckered. Your walking out is your BEST weapon (make sure you leave a number. They WILL call. )

I have the same year and got it with similar mileage...I got them to go with 16900. I felt it was a good price because of the condition and it was a large respectable (BMW, Honda "I know") dealer chain. Liked paying more for the comfort of knowing they were less likely to screw me over being that they had a reputation to hold.

This was also summer tho when people wanted a RWD sports car, adn not winter when people want a AWD. Also you could get less bc end of month/year.

so they gave me a final offer of 17000 plus fees and taxes, I told them to screw off, and found a manual blue with GT package for the same damn asking price in the bay area, not that they're giving me a great deal either.

Problem is they want 17500 for that one before fees and taxes saying wholesale price is 18 and change, but at least it has some nice extra options....

No, NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO !

Do not get it. Do you need a car in a hurry or something? if not just wait.

17K + tax and fees gonna put you into something like almost 20K. Not to mention you're doing financing + the interest u gonna end up with something like 23-4K.

totally not worth it IMO, especially for a 04, even 05 is not worth it.

Just wait, I bet that the same 8 will be sitting in the same lot for another month or 2. Leave them your number, Tell them that if the car is not sold in 2 months, you will take it for 15K.

Dont let them threat you, the money is in YOUR pocket. What they got? A piece of metal sitting in the lot. YOU have the power. Not them.

When you go shop for a car, always bring that confidence on your face. dont show any of the *I want this car BADLY* emotion.

In Jan 07, I bought my '04 RX-8 with just over 15k miles for $15.5k with $500 down and a full warranty. I'm a few hundred miles from 30k as of today. I'm in AZ, so it might be a little cheaper here than in Cali, but I think the $16k price is reasonable.

Carbon RX-8 is right: they have you in an emotional spot right now, so they're playing with you. You also have another drawback: it's a Mazda dealership, so they know they can move it. You have to shift the power back to your side. Here's how:

Given the time of year, if you take the credit union financing option you mentioned (or another outside option like www.roadloans.com), get a cashier's check from the credit union or another non-dealership lender for $15k, and walk in right around closing time ready to buy on the spot, either dealer will give it to you for the terms you want because they don't have to look for financing, and they don't have to wait for payment from the financing company.

The reason why I say $15k instead of $16-17k is because they'll agree to lower prices because they know they'll make the money back from you in Finance when they offer warranties, etc. Get a quote from www.warrantydirect.com, print it out, and take it with you. When finance offers the special warranty, counter with your quote. Show them the paper. My finance lady almost **** herself (literally) when I did that.

Also, check out the factory warranty balance and what they're offering you. I bet either the warranty will cover the repairs that you want done (paint, etc) with only a small deductible if any. You could also counter offer with a "$15k, right here, right now or $17k and you repair the car" offer. Just remember that you'll be paying interest on that extra $2k if they opt to repair and sell to you.

You're 11 days from a new year, and even though the car will be a year older after 11 days, the dealership also won't be on that last big year end push anymore. They won't be as hungry. Lift up your skirt, grab your *****, and buy the car for $15k.

Good luck man. Hope to see pics here soon!

GREAT post man, thanks for that one

I AM in a bit of a difficult spot more than an emotional spot right now because the car I'm driving, (a saturn) has a clutch that is on it's last legs and it also needs to be smogged and I know that it won't pass it so that means a new cat since it burns a quart of oil per gas tank. So by buying the 8 I'm saving a couple hundred in smogging, parts and labor and other costs. It's a trade-off, I'd rather spend the extra money on a newer car than repair what is an unsellable old clunker and fix it myself later, I do love the old girl tho and she'll make insuring the 8 so much cheaper.

I gave up on browning mazda, they were completely unreasonable and I didn't like the salesman at all. The other one I found with the GT package, they're unwilling to go below 17,500 at all saying something about wholesale price and that dealers won't make any money off me at all, something about refurbishing costs on used vehicles before they can sell them. if you can call BS on that and shed light on it, cool.

thanks for the help tho, I'll let you all know what happens.

No way they can get you 5.95%. That's why there are credit unions.
