AK Storing RX8 outside in Alaska for 12 months

Any fellow northerners out there? I am looking at storing my beloved girl for 12 months while I take a vacation to Afghanistan. Has anyone done this in the past? Can anyone give any recommendations? I have been calling around to various storage places and no one will assume the liability of having to start the car once in a while when I am gone. Ergo, the car will sit for 12 months without being touched.

Thoughts, opinions? Thanks!

make sure to use some oil and fuel stabilizers. you might also want to disconnect the battery. the OEM mazda car covers work pretty well too. they are nice and tight so they don't blow off too easily.

Economical

It is far more economical to store it outside. It will cost me ~$60 a month to store it outside compared to ~$300 a month to store it inside. If I have to though, I will resort to that

I had the car fully winterized and flushed prior to having it shipped to Alaska. Everything is top notch for storage right now

Also if you have a friend or family member in the area, record your mileage for your own records and then hand the guy the keys to go start it and let it run. Also maybe make arrangements with a local shop to send a reminder about an oil change and what not. A year of sitting is never good for any car let a lone an RX8. Just a couple of ideas I had about it.

i checked with Pods http://www.pods.com/ because i know they have a military discount but they have no operations in Alaska
Might have been nice just to park it in a pod and have them tuck it away in a warehouse for a year.

I would STRONGLY recommend that you try to find some sheltered storage. It doesn't have to be heated. The temperature changes are not as big a deal as the damage that may occur from leaving the car outside.

Storing the car for a year (without starting) is not really a big deal. The 2 links above offer good advise.

I would also pull the battery out of the car, and for the engine use an aerosol fogging oil (instead of trying to inject motor oil). Amsol make a good one. You can follow the "Seafoam" or "Zoom Power Engine Cleaner" threads for the best way to get the fogging into the engine.

Those are all good ideas. I would offer to start it weekly for you, but I started mine twice in past 2 months, so I'm obviously not dependable. I'm in Anchorage, too. Godspeed in Afganistan.
