HWY 101 turns into HWY 1 turns into HWY 101 After you get to the Bay Area then you get to enjoy I-5 and a straight boring drive.

About 5 years ago, my cousin and I drove my eclipse to LA from Seattle. It took us about 19 hours all the way to LA. We took I5 straight to LA from here. And then came back on 101......took us a bit longer getting back home.

HWY 101 will be much slower. Lots of twisty roads and you can get stuck behind some campers. But it is a great scenic drive.

Coast

Stick with the coast for as much as you can stand a slower ride. It's too scenic to pass up, all the way down to LA. Allow time if you can, to stop at any number of small charming towns. Cut across to I-5 if you're tired of driving and want autopilot, or at night. All you will see are the rear ends of trucks and cows.

That is me I always see your 8 but not you. I've talked to the guy with the Blue 8 a few times. What do you do for Laika?

As for 101, head out to Tillamook to catch 101 South until you reach Los Angles

All this talk is convincing me I need to make the drive myself soon!! Definitely a coastal road trip that is one of America's gems.

If you plan it right I could get you Duck tickets. Also if your looking for good clam chowder on the oregon coast don't go to Moe's. There is a good place to eat in Depot Bay called the Sea Hag, its got a wooden sea captin out side.

Thanks guys for the suggestions....

Zoom, my friend and I are planning to stop by the Bay Area and meet up with some family overnight.

Bakerboy, thanks for the tip about Depot Bay and the Ducks tix offer but unfortunately I have some family stuff to get to in the Bay Area. As for the chowdah, I think I can sneak a few minutes to sample some. Always time for chowdah right?

Also, is the weather going to be a little crazy for this kind of road trip? Its already getting wet here in Portland, I was wondering if it will be icy as I go more and more south? Going through I-5 in the mountains?

It could be icy crossing the Siskiyou's.

I did the PDX to LA drive just a couple weeks ago when my Grandma passed away.

We mostly stuck to I5, but we did take a small detour through SF on the way down. Walking around the Pier area and driving down Lombard was interesting.

As far as other must do things are concerned, the nearest In&Out burger is 7hrs from here in Redding!

Unfortunately I couldn't make it to the SevenStock while I was down there.
