First 2005 RX-8 in Beaverton
I'm the proud new owner of a new black 2005 RX-8 here in good ol' Beaverton, Oregon and I love this car! Spent several months researching both here at the club and on other sites, three test drives and an ocean later this beauty is now sitting in my driveway cleaming beautifully!
I've been driving her nicely for the first 1,000 miles (I'm at 750) as instructed by many here and look forward to revving her past 7rpm's afterwards. Looking forward to that as well as adding a few extras (fender strakes, underside lighting, custom plates). And the MP3 player is an awesome excessory!
Does anyone know the laws on in-dash DVD players in Oregon? I've been having trouble finding that information and would like to add a switch box to the Nav system then add one in for long trips.
Oh yeah, after having her mostly broken in I get 18-20mpg (if I don't drive with a lead foot--which is difficult!), almost as good as my old '99 Jetta. But hey, it's worth it with a five mile commute to work every day and people love to stair at this car. And to be quite honest, it's a little gratifying when all your co-workers want (demand) a ride. You won't get that respond for any other car under $40k!
I want to thank everyone on this site for their input on this vehicle, it's helped me out enormously. If anyone's looking to purchase an RX-8 in the Portland area I can point you to someone that can get it for just over invoice, no haggling!
Take care,
Aslynn

congrats! hope to see you around town
oregon is against having a video player operating in the driver's view. doesnt mean you cant have one just that it cant be on while driving. that's my understanding but you'd be better getting the straight scoop from ODOT.

Here's what I recieved from ODOT:
"Nothing in the Oregon Revised Statutes deals with devices that play
pre-recorded television programming (i.e. DVD players). There is language
that deals specifically with devices that can receive television broadcast
signals.
A police officer could cite a driver for careless or reckless driving if
watching a DVD screen caused them to drive in a dangerous manner."
If/When I find out what statutes relate to television broadcasts I'll post them here for others to check out.

Here it is Oregon Revised Statute 815.240:
"815.240 Unlawful use of vehicle television equipment; penalty. (1) A person commits the offense of unlawful use of vehicle television equipment if the person drives or moves on any highway or owns and causes or knowingly permits to be driven or moved on any highway any motor vehicle equipped with any television viewer, screen or other means of visually receiving a television broadcast that is any of the following:
(a) Located in the vehicle at any point forward of the back of the driver’s seat.
(b) Visible to the driver while operating the motor vehicle.
(2) The offense described in this section, unlawful use of vehicle television equipment, is a Class B traffic violation. [1983 c.338 §494; 1985 c.69 §4]"
Given that a judge would be within his right to interpet "television broadcast" as any device capable of transmitting television programming to the screen (and a DVD player would fall under that umbrella).
Hope this is helpful to anyone else that's wondered.
