Talking The Cop was Nice

So, a week ago yesterday I was pulled onto E Lk Samm Pkwy and head to work, thinking: "There's gonna be a cop beside the road today, I know it." So I behave for about a mile when it occurs to me that I really don't care if there's a cop beside the road. So I step on it. Next thing I know there's lights flashing way back behind me, but there's a couple of cars in between me and the flashing lights so I slow down to the speed limit and keep one eye on the mirror and the other on the road. The first car pulls over and the lights keep coming, the second car pulls over and the lights keep coming. I'm next in line so I pull over and wait. What seems like 2 minutes later a Sammamish cop pulls up behind me. He walks up and asks "Do you know what the speed limit is ont this road?" What could I do, I simply replied "35" as calmly as possible. You see, when I pulled over I'd already resigned myself to going to jail instead of work. Then cop asks "Are you aware that you were going faster than that?" "I got a bit carried away" I reply. "Yeah, I know you got carried away" he says, "You were flying." He takes my papers and goes back to the cruiser. When he comes back he says "I'm not going to give you a ticket this morning, but if I catch you again I'm writting you for wreckless. I know this is a nice car, but this is a residential street and there could be people walking. You need to take it easy." He then goes back to his car and we part company. Keep in mind, I was doing in excess of 85 in 35 when I went by him. How's that for an early B-Day present. Needless to say, I think I've used up my Karma for the month.

You got it. It's not a sports car if it's not red.

dmp, it was 05:30 in the morning. It may have been a bad choice of roads (but I do drive it twice a figgin day), but at least I was almost all alone. And BTW, it was AT LEAST 85. Hey, I know it was stupid, but I don't turn 25 until tomorrow. I'll start worrying about being responsible and wise sometime after that. j/k. Actually, I realize how stupid it was. Like I told the cop, I got carried away. Sometimes you just feel like doing something no matter how dumb it is.

No - grown-ups do not feel like that. Grown-ups know when and where to speed. We know where to cross the line. Perhaps you feel it makes you more of a man to speed in a residential area. (shrug)

Frankly...here's what I'd suggest. Sell your car. visit www.goarmy.com.

dmp,
Well, I guess I'll have to respond with the usuall Objectivist responce to people like you. Go $*&% yourself. And don't tell me you've never FEALT like being stupid. Acting on it is another issue entirely. However, if there had been any risk at all of my harming someone else, I'd not have behaved as I did. I helped pay for the f'ing road, I'm going to do with exactly as I please. No harm no foul. If you believe otherwise, please move to Canada where socialism is actually popular. Reality check: it's a semi-residential road and the speed limit is 35. Have you ever played on Chuckanut Drive, or any other windy side road. If so, your as guilty as I. It sure is lovely to see the RX8 forum headed the same way as the RX7 forum. monitored by jerks with nothing better to do than insult others.

I enjoy driving. If anyone has a problem with that, stay the hell out of my way.

Kris - take this to heart. Please. You are a child. When you grow up, come back and re-read what you've written here. Then you will understand.

Ok guys, lets knock it off. Kristopher recognizes that it wasn't a good idea to drive at that speed and has stated as much. DMP seems like a reasonable adult person, but I have a hard time believing that he's never exceded the speed limit.

Your both starting to act like kids trying to get the last word in...lets drop it and get back to talking about our sweet cars.

Thanks

Interesting. While 85 is undoubtedly excessive on ELSP, the 35 mph limit is, imho, designed to ease the revenue crunch of the City of Sammamish. I drive the road every day, and have found that traffic routinely flows at about 10 mph over the limit. And at 5:30AM, well, I've done the road at that hour at over 60 many a time. Just do me and your other neighbors a favor; don't lose it and tie up traffic even worse than it already is duing the 7-10AM and 3-7PM rush hours. :D

Whatever! Id that's the case I guess I'll never grow up. Hell I raced a WRX this morning on my way to work in a 30 zone and I hit speeds in excess of 85. I have a better suggestion for you dmp... why don't you sell your car since you obviously have no reason to own a sportscar. I love my 8 and I have been driving fast since I first got my license. I have been in two accidents in that time one where some idiot put his car in reverse at a stoplight and literally backed into me. The 2nd time was during the ice storm in Portland, OR. back in '96 (if I remember right). I have been pulled over for going in excess of 160 mph when racing a Mustang in my 575 hp Toyota MR2. So get off your high-horse and give Kristopher a break. I have driven with him and I can vouch for his skills at driving. Hell he may very well be a better driver than I am.

Well that doesn't sound like a very smart choice 93, 160 is pretty excessive. I personally would have hauled you off to jail. But the point is, we can have disagreements about the choices we make without resorting to childish name calling.

Truce, dmp?

And since my karma account is overdrawn, I'm behaving myself (most of the time), especially in Sammamish.

Kristopher d,
I haven't had a ticket in WA state in 15 years, following two pieces of advice:
1) never exceed the speed limit by more than 10 mph during continuous driving, and
2) when you do exceed the limit, do so only briefly. Blip it up and over by 30-50+ for
only a few seconds and then coast down to less than 10 over. Holding it up there
for more than a minute or two is just inviting too much danger and tickets in this state.
I know, when I was a teenager back in the late 80s, I used to speed 15-30+ everyday,
everytime and wound up with a dozen tickets, numerous accidents and a revoked
license.
What bugs me about ELSP is that I always seem to catch up to the car in front of me
and then we just lollygag at the speed limit. It's the same feeling I used to get when
I used to have a motorcycle, blip it up above the limit and then lollygag behind people.
(I got ride of the bike when I popped a rear tire doing 65 on a little crowded 2-lane
55 mph highway near Pullman).
Chris

Lucky
Last time I was pulled over in Bellevue, the cop told us if we were going to drive like that on the road (there were two of us on motorcycles) we should go down to the track and take lessons. Our mistake was in informing him that we teach the class and showed him our race licenses and credentials. Oops. that one got us reckless driving tickets. We got off completly, but it is still a pain going to court.
that has been a few years and I have slowed down now, my last speeding ticket was only for 93 mph.
For what it is worth I usually only do my excessive speeding in montana or at the track on my motorcycles. Getting old I guess. Although, My Ducati will easily clear 120 getting onto the freeway in the morning...
