Cold weather - washing car

Well over the past week their has been frost on my car in the morning, and when I park the car at work its still there and in the afternoon the sun thaws it out and eventually dries up and leaves dirty water spots all over the car.

My car was looking like a black and brown turd so I washed it in 35 degree weather. It looks damn good now but now my driveway and part of the street is an ice rink. LOL. Oh well. I heated some sand up in the oven and spread it all over the place.

So anyway, how does everyone wash their car in cold weather like this or am I just a one dedicated person?

I'm out of my forum, being from Illinois, but can sympathize with the weather. My winter solution is hanging tarps in the garage to protect the shelves and tools and a hose (actually a backwash hose from my pool) on the ground around the car to corral the water and force it out under the door. I have a portable forced air propane heater that brings the garage to about 45 degrees even when it is in the 20's outside. Lot of work, but worth it.

I washed my 8 today in sunny but cold (low 30's), Seattle weather. I fill my bucket from my house's hot water heater via the drain faucet. That keeps the fingers from freezing. After washing, I use my leaf blower and some microfiber towels to dry it. Finish it off with a little detail spray and, viola, I have the best looking 8 in the neighborhood. Actually, I have the only 8 in the neighborhood but that's beside the point.

The sparkle of mica chips in crisp winter sunshine makes it all worthwhile. Remember, a clean 8 is a happy 8.

I have been going to Carriage house carwash in Beaverton and they do everything touchless (other than the drying and stuff like that) for about $20 which includes the inside and out and they always do a decent job no matter how cold it is outside. i just sit inside and eat my cookies and drink my coffee while they freeze their asses off.

a map to the place.

I use a do it yourself car wash place 10 minutes form my home, in Tokyo. Tempuratures here are very nearly the same as Seattle most of the year...despite the fact the rest of Japan goes into deep freeze....we are a BIT drier though, being in a rain shadow here... But the was place has sprayers etc. which use warm water...so my fingers don't freeze or anything...I use an extra few minutes of water at first to warm up the car body a bit before starting....the trouble I have....is that the ground there gets like a Wisconsin lake during winter....sheet upon sheet of ice to drive onto...walk on...spray with a little warm water for the fun of it....and then try to drive off the cold, wet ice when you're done...At least once a week, regrdless of weather, and in Tokyo we don't drive much during the week...only week-ends...so it proabaly doesn't need it that much....BUT a clean 8 is a happy 8....;-) (borrowed that phrase i did...)
