Ex8 - OPNSRC

I picked up a 2004 Mazda RX-8 (with a low compression motor), 6-Speed transmission, Sunroof, Leather interior (but front seats were swapped for cloth at some points), Navigation sound system (but navigation screen is missing).

I also picked up a Bettery Place Battery pack from a guy (EVTV) who bought a bunch from a bankruptcy auction in Europe, The batteries are the same cells as they use in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf. Here it is getting stripped down. I am not using the enclosure or battery management system.

I was going to follow these instructions to remove the rotary motor but then got a light bulb moment. I went by a friends performance shop to see if he knew anybody who needed a rotary core to rebuild. He did and I made that persona deal. You come to my house and pull the motor out and you can have it. Saves me the manual labor and trying to get rid of a bad motor. So here it is gas, oil, exhaust and noise and all. Now the R is removed I can get on with putting the E in.

Then I picked up a Siemens 3 phase AC motor /Azure Dynamics Conteoller /EVTV GeneralizedElectricVehicleControllUunit (ECU) package from the same place I got the batteries. The motor can put out up to 220 lbft or torque and was designed for a

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Transit_Connect. So it wont be the fastest thing in the world but should get similar performance to a Nissan Leaf/ Ford Transit, but it will look a whole lot better.

Pics of my bench (well floor) setup coming.

You'll get better fuel economy than the rest is us. What are the specs for your motor? How much does your battery pack weigh, is it a LiFePo4?

I'm looking forward to seeing how you link up the throttle. With the electric system the 8 are you planning to use the stock pedals? And what are you using for the vacuum system/reservoir?

Good luck!

Motor is a 47Kw motor with 220 lbft or torque, max speed 10kRPM. 1PV5135 4WS14 is the model Number if you want more info.

Batteries are 8lbs per module with 48 modules making up the pack. So after I add mounting brackets should be in the 400# ball park. They are LiMn2O4.

Some one else in the EVTV group is also converting an RX8 and already has the Mazda RX-8 dual Hall Effect throttle pedal working with the GEVCU (ECU).

Vacuum Ill probably use a Hella UP28

I will be using the stock transmission. Probably leave it in 3rd gear for most driving and using 4-6th for highways.
