Talking Engine Swap

Sure, sure, you'd lose that free-revving nature that we all love, but no one would ever complain about the low torque!

wow...that'd be great. You could use just one Piston. Then when some ricer walks up, "hey dude, how many cylinders that thing got" You could say 1! And of course the follow up, "haha, yeah, what the horse power on that, 5hp?" And your answer, "7780hp, wanna race?" Mooohahahaaaaa! :D

I'm thinking a lightweight flywheel might make it a bit more free revving...

What do they use to turn that thing over with? I saw the show when they showed that moster motor but they never said how the hell they turned it over to start it. I am guessing its not a pull start.

maybe the momentum of the tugs pushing it out of its berth and out of the dock creates enoughh spin on the shaft to get things moving. i dunno

I'm guessing they have another smaller engine that they use to start it. Probably another diesel!

These engines are turbocharged 2 stroke diesel engines and turbos don't move when the engine doesn't run. So they need to use auxiliary blowers to start the engines which are probably also used to move the pistons as well. (2 stroke diesel engines require blowers to scavenge the combustion chamber).

The turbo's probably wouldn't even fit on a pick up truck:

Btw Sulzer is a Swiss company (just because Gigolo Jason thinks Switzerland just makes cutlery and cheese). :p

Thanks I knew they were 2 strokes and how they work, I figured it had to be some sort of phnematic starting system. Smaller 2 strokes (detroits) use a starter. I just didn;t know exactly how it worked on a scale that large. Thanks for the info. Man thoses things are cool.

It's still sooo much better when the ricer asks; "How many cylinders?" and you say, "NONE!"

that engine has one thing that the renesis does not have

more than 160 lb/ft of torque

then again.............that engine lacks one thing the renesis does have

9000 redline!

can you imagine those pistons trying to move at 9000 rpms?
