Thumbs up What should I look for?

Hey guys, new here & I've just recently decided that I'm buying an RX8!

I've done a substantial amount of research but as you can imagine each site contradicts another. Whether it be oils etc. or just how to maintain your RX8 in general.

I don't know an awful lot about cars so why not come to those who know most about the car I'm interested in?

I'm just wondering what to look for in a pre-owned RX8 as from what I've read the car needs to be well looked after etc.
I know it's a rotary engine so I'm wondering what a good range of KM's is to buy it in, all the very basic stuff really!

Thanks heaps for your help.

never buy an rx8 without getting a compression check or be prepared to replace the engine

Ah! I do apologize for that, I understand nothing is more annoying than someone posting a thread like this, completely missing a previous thread/sticky above! When I pressed 'back' I did see that and spent the past couple hours reading the whole way through it. Extremely helpful and an immense amount of detail. Will certainly be sticking to my choice of car assuming I can find one in decent condition.

It's no problem that's why there is a newbie thread section

If the idea of the engine popping at any time and the very high maintenance doesn't scare you away, the rx8 is an amazing machine, and you will get many (s)miles out of it.

Haha indeed!

Well no it intrigues me more than anything! And well that's exactly what I'm hoping for, a car I can DRIVE, not just drive if that makes sense at all.

The rx8 is definitely a you can drive, and drive hard ( it wants you to and it's good for it).
Have you driven an 8 yet? If not I recomend test driving one just remember to not take the rpms higher then 4k till it's warmed up (easier to watch if you are in a S2 that has the walking readline). but once its warmed up don't let the rpms get below 4k thats when the engine comes alive.

Unfortunately I haven't yet but I am incredibly keen on it! And yes I did see that, I'll have to let you know how it goes once I finally do but I'm afraid that once I drive it I won't be able to hold back on becoming a new owner of the 8

Don't be scared of high rpms on the curves and ramps, on the straight hit that red line and enjoy the feeling.

This car is made to be driven hard, if your friend has an auto then make sure you try a manual 6spd as well to get the true picture.

I not long finished my drive. It was incredible. I kept it at between 4 - 5000 revs until he said pretty much exactly what you said above. We took the freeway but regrettably I only took it to 160 - 170km/h
It was exciting and I had a smile painted in my face. I'm sold and definitely know what I want now.

However the state I live in only has 8's sitting on around 90,000km's (not sure what that is in miles) so I've checked interstate where there are much better looked after RX's with a lot more details from the owners (whom were clearly passionate about their RX8.) A few have 110,000km's on them however the engine was rebuilt between 10 - 25,000 ago with receipts etc to prove it. The downside is I can't exactly test-drive them nor can I get a compression test till it is here (in which case it is too late) or if one of the owners is kind enough to do that for me.

So getting to the point; do you have any recommendations on the situation in placed in? I just don't want an 8 that hasn't been driven properly nor maintained etc.

Talk to the owners long distance, find one willing to do a compression test on a car you like.

Going long range to buy the right car is far far better than buying the wrong one locally.

About the only main added points to ensure are in good shape if you are going to be flying out and driving it home are the fuel pump (more likely to fail when used for many hours on end) and the cooling system.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I was also thinking about getting it shipped here but depending on what's cheaper I my fly interstate and drive it back - would be a great way to get to know my car in any case.
