Value of an RX8 (excellent condition) with bad engine

Hello all. I purchased a 2006 Mazda RX-8 Touring about three and a half years ago. At the time the car had 12,000 miles on it (the person rarely drove it) and was in excellent condition. I did several things to extend the life of the engine. (e.g. oil bypass for two stroke). Allas, it now has 81,000 miles on it and has developed a classic signs of compression loss (this was verified with a compression test by Mazda).

I have two questions

1) what is a 2006 Mazda RX-8 in excellent condition with a bad engine worth?
2) is there a market for RX-8 with bad engines or is that something I’m very unlikely to find a buyer?

Thanks in advance

Randall

Without seeing the car I'd say 500$ if the thing is show room quality then at most I'd spend 1500$

Thanks. Any idea what an engine replacement cost? Mazda is quoting me 6k.

6k is about average for a dealership, any local reputable rebuilder might be able to do it for less.
If you're mechanical savvy you could get a remain shipped for ~3k (with core charge) but likely no warranty

It depends were you are located. In CA were everything costs a bit more there are several for sale in the same condition with an advertised price of $1500-2K.

I'm in a similar situation myself. Just spent $4K+ on body work a few weeks ago, then this week the engine lost compression and needs replacing. I'd really love to keep her, but sounding like replacing the engine will cost about what the car is worth. (Mine's a '04 with 135K miles, so a little older than yours.)

Good luck!

Well I guess putting an engine into it isn't really feasible unless I do it myself. Is there a market for good cars with bad engines. Aside from this forum how do I get the word out that I have a car that I'm looking to sell for cheap (as long as it goes to a good home)

Thoughts?

Posting pictures usually gets people's attention. Any beneficial modifications wouldn't hurt to be listed either. I bought my last one from here knowing it had a weak engine but the mods alone were worth more than a good running 8.
