Question Unsure of how to work a form but I have an issue I need trouble shooted.

I own a 2008 GT RX-8 the car has been driving fine up until Sunday. I drove down the road shifted through all gears fine and then the transmission got stuck in 5th gear the gearnob still moves freely as though there car is in neutral but when you attempt to start the car it just leaps forward unless you put your foot on the clutch.

I have checked fluids and they seem fine I am wondering if a mazda warranty will cover it or if I am in for buying a new gearbox?

If its under warranty they should. It does not sound like a clutch issue. They'll probably say it is to put it out of warranty.

So if you throw it in neutral then start it with the clutch in. When you let out the clutch it will grab and try to go even though the shifter is in neutral still?

That sounds like a shift linkage. or maybe the shifter has poped out of place.

That is exactly the problem. I was worried the 5th gear splines are jammed. If they don't cover it I am not sure of the best course of action.

Im not sure about the 8 trans but most have pretty large splines that would be hard to get locked up.

My first thought is the shifter. You can pull it pretty easy and see if anything is broken. Look up short shifter install.

If that looks good id think its a linkage in the trans.

Either way it should be covered under warranty. How many miles do you have?

The powertrain warranty is 5yrs, 60k, so this day in 2009 is the cut off date. unlikely that there is still warranty coverage
