Trading my Auto for a Manual?

I've only had the automatic for a month. I totaled my Miata and had to get another car fast, therefore the automatic was all that was on the dealer's lot. I can drive a stick no problem and it's my preferred trannie. I once owned a manual Chevy Cavalier. I bought that one practically brand new for $7000. The dealer had it sitting on the lot for 7 months and no interest because nobody wants a Chevy Cavalier with a manual. Anyway, the used car dealer has another RX-8 that is the same year with a 6 speed. He said it's sharper than the one I bought but it's currently slowly having a new motor put in. The new motor supposedly only has 22k miles on it. It came from a wreck. The dealer mentioned that he might swap the 6-speed for the automatic I'm driving for an extra $500. I only paid $5K for it. Should I trust the guy about the miles on the new motor? Obviously I'd prefer the 6 speed just for the extra fun. I've been playing around with the paddle shifting in the manual but it's not the same. On another note, I'm still surprised at how fast I can get to 70 mph on the highway even in the automatic. It's definitely faster than my old Miata (R.I.P.)

Mileage is irrelevant without a compression test. Obviously odds of good compression are higher on a low mileage motor, but the proof will be in the test.

If that checks out, I would jump on that deal. Especially if yours is a 2004-5 4-port automatic.
