So today I was driving the rx8, and was merging onto the highway, was in 2nd gear shifted into 3rd at 9k rpms then 3rd to 4th at 9k rpms, then all of a sudden there was so much smoke coming from my exhaust, pretty much filled the high way with smoke. I pulled over turned the car off waited some time and restarted it was still smoking, temp gauge was totally normal same with oil gauge I was about 5ish minutes from home so decided to drive it home was shifting and accelerating fine. by the time I got home the car wasn’t puffing smoke anymore from the exhaust. I plugged in my ob2 and had a U0167 code ( lost communication with vehicle immobilzer controls module) don’t know if this was related to my issue as I always have a check engine light on from cat/air pump delete. I deleted all the codes have to take the car for a drive again to see if that u0167 code comes back on, but if anyone has any idea what woulda caused this that would be a great help because that was an abnormal amount of smoke. I treat the car like it should be treated, reving it, shifting at high Rpms, spark plugs/coils/wires changes, fresh oil all the time with top brands, coolant level seems fine. Always let the car warm up before driving it and reving it once before shutting it off.

 

Describe smoke - white dense fog or faint/moderate grey plumes? If white - ye olde coolant in the combustion chamber - not good,

 

I’d say white greyish hard to distinguish between the both, was thinking coolant but my reservoir is full, had a burning smell though.

 

actually looking at images on google at different exhaust smoke, I’d say it was probably and blue smoke, also had a drop stream of green liquid on the side of my bumper no idea if that was related didn’t smell it was just the one drip stream just saying everything I seen just in case if it’s related or not.

It doesn't take much coolant to start generating white smoke. What it's telling you is you have a coolant leak into the engine and lower coolant system pressure means the coolant boils at a lower temperature and thus you'll get poorer cooling and eventually overheat/warp.

 

Anyway to tell it’s forsure an coolant leak? Just keep checking reservoir ? Cause hasn’t been moving and temperature gauge is always the same just below half way, I was reading another thread and they where saying it coulda been oil as I was ripping on it the ecu coulda cut off the fuel supply briefly and it just starting burning oil instead briefly, might explain why I wasn’t puffing smoke anymore by the time I got home

 

Burning oil instead of fuel is not a thing. It sounds like it barfed coolant into the intake via the PCV. This can happen if you overfilled the oil, or if the engine is producing too much blowby and pressurizing the oil pan (which happens at high rpm).

Open the intake and see if it's oily. Clean it out if so, make sure the oil level is correct and maybe start planning a compression test, if it's barfing.

It's probably not coolant, coolant smokes on cold start up.

 

Check intake. Perform block test and compression test. Pray to whatever God you believe in and get back to us.

 

I’ll try and do that this weekend, as for the compression test if I am loosing compression I might aswell run it to the ground before doing a rebuild ? Or cheaper to do a rebuild earlier on ? Just took it on a 30minute drive and everything seemed okay drove it pretty hard. But I’ll take a look at the intake this weekend and my air filter see if anythings on it.

 

You don't really rebuild your engine, it's more economical to buy a rebuilt one from a known rebuilder, and give them yours as core.

It could just have just been slightly overfilled oil.

 

Fingers crossed because everything else seemed fine and first time that’s happened haha but I’ll keep you guys posted, if it occurs again I’ll probably look into a rebuild not sure what my city has to offer.

 

Took my air box out just to check things out and all this oil is here and I believe that’s was cause my smoking out of my exhaust for a bit, anyone seen this before ? Glad it’s not coolant but wth

 

Overfill the oil and that can definitely happen. That's what I suspect.

 

Weird cause I checked level after I changed the oil and was good and have probably put 300ish kms since I changed and not the first time I’ve driven it hard.

 

Excessive blowby caused by low compression would be worst case scenario. A compression test would confirm if its the case. Not using a funnel when topping oil off can also cause this issue but I don't think this is the case as it appears to be oil pan oil.

 

This is your answer. Reading the OP, mine did the same thing on occasion. And usually accelerating on an on-ramp. I'd usually smell it first, then look out of the rearview and see my smoke screen. It happened to me during an autox event too. Nothing to be overly concerned about, but it is a sign that your oil control rings are failing, meaning your engine health is declining.
