What did you decide to do? Did you have them replace the engine or have you spoken with Mazda North America reference the pricing at that dealer? Have you called around to different dealers to discuss the cost of replacing the engine?

Edit: I missed that you sold the car to the dealership. I feel as though they took advantage of you and thats disgusting and disappointing. What is the name of the dealership?

Mazda, Naples, Florida was the dealer. Apparently the dishonest Manager is no longer there and my car is still sitting at the dealership. The new Manager called me today for details and he is going to get back to me tomorrow. It seems strange that my car was fine until I filled it up with a new tank of gas. The old Manager said my car failed the compression test which they charged me $600 for and then told me they could not get an engine for it. It had about 57,000 Millie’s on it and it is a Canadian Car. I then thought I had no choice but to sign the car over to him and he was not willing to give me anything else for it. 😩

Is the new manager trying to make this right somehow? It's not ideal but maybe you can buy the car back for a trivial $2 price and go your separate ways? Nobody is going to buy a low compression RX8 from them, it's just taking up space.

That's a good sign at least.
If he seems open to making it right, remain civil, but firm in your resolve that you only found out the true value of your car after he lied to you and conned you out of it, they hired him, it's their responsibility now.
If you still don't get a decent response, contact the owner.
Then MNAO if he's not helpful.
Good luck!

Hi again.
I wanted to let you know I decided to send a friendly email to the GM of the dealership to let him know we are aware of your situation, and that I am confident he will do the right thing.

If you feel that was inappropriate, I apologize.
I wanted him to know you aren't 'alone' in your situation, and that even though the person who did it may no longer be there, other RX8 members are watching, and have your back.

He has my full name, email address and phone number.

Again, I hoped you wouldn't mind, I just thought the skids could use a little grease.

I sent them another email this morning.
You need to keep calling them and don't be passive.
Be proactive and keep the pressure on them.
Call and talk to the manager.
Ask for the owner, and tell them your next call will be to Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).

They're hoping you give up and go away.

Keep their feet to the fire!

They also texted me 2 days ago & never followed up.

I texted back this morning.

If you're wondering why I care, I have 2 grown daughters and a grown granddaughter.

I KNOW how unethical people in the industry can be.
I witnessed it first hand for years, many times.

I was a mechanic in the 80s and 90s for an unethical shop owner.
At one point I was manager, but I stepped down after he wouldn't stop pressuring me to rip customers off.

I refused, even though at the time unemployment in south Louisiana was 25%.
I needed the job, but not on the expense of my conscience.

His philosophy was that even if he got caught, he'd simply say, "Take it to court," knowing almost everyone wouldn't.
I saw that firsthand also, then he'd actually laugh, proud he made money off of cheating customers.

I can tell you they will do everything possible to keep your car if they are unethical, hoping you'll give up.
I won't be surprised if they force you to court.

Do it.
Get angry, take the fight to them and demand it be returned.

@Shedden
If they've had it on the lot for 5 months, then they're probably trying to have the title transferred ftom Canada.

I won't be surprised if it suddenly 'disappears'.

If you're in the area, go over there, walk out to your car, and see if a salesman comes out.

They always do, so if they ignore you, they're actively trying to take official ownership of it.

You need to act quickly.
If you have a Canadian Representative, contact them to get involved.

I did that once when I was in a bad way years ago & couldn't afford an attorney.
He actually got involved and the situation was resolved.

I just looked up the dealership. The car in question is not shown on inventory list.
Maybe some one can go there and look in the back lot..
If anyone wants to Email the SM (at least he is listed as such..).

I don't think it's a good idea to meddle. The new manager is already talking to Shedden, let them do their thing. If it goes sideways we can escalate.

Well, they said they would talk to her Monday, and it appears they haven't yet.

That leads me to believe they already sold it, or they're stalling while working on their strategy to keep it.
If she's being passive, that could backfire.

From my understanding, I agree with Loki in that, if you are not directly involved in it, it's the best to stay out of it unless it really becomes necessary. As for @Shedden, pay a physical visit to the dealer and talk to the new manager. Sometimes they do get busy and genuinely forget.

If it's not being sold as a retail unit, then I'd actually be curious to see how much the dealer can get out of a wholesale deal, especially with it being a foreign car that may or may not be importable.

I don't think it can hurt to go there in person and speak with the new service manager. He may have zero knowledge of why the car is there or how it got there. It may be worth speaking with him directly and seeing if the car can be purchased back for the original sale price. He may just want the car out of there at this point and may be willing to do the right thing.

The car is still in the lot where I left it. My car has now been outside in Naples, Florida since Thanksgiving Weekend. My car has always been in a garage. My friend verified this today and sent me a picture.

I checked at home for a replacement engine and they have one and it would cost me $9000 Canadian installed with 74,000 miles on it. Don’t even know if this is really the case as my car had only 57,000 miles on it. It would cost me $2500 US or more to ship the car back to Canada. I just don’t think it is worth the hassle. 😩 I’m giving up the fight! I enjoyed this car and have had great memories but the time comes when you just have to let go! Thank you all for your kindness and support. This Mazda Group is amazing and I’m grateful to you all. I have had many sleepless nights over this but it’s not worth your health. I’ll be celebrating my 70th Birthday in June and I will raise a glass to all of you! Time to move on and put this lesson behind me! Life is like a box of chocolates you just don’t know what will be inside! Thank you all once again! Susan

But.. you don't even know it's actually broken right?
Definitely don't buy a 74000km engine for 9k that's bananas. You van get a fresh rebuild for that.. IF you need it

The way I see it, I think they should be able to give it back to you for the amount of money you paid.

Not sure any wholesaler would want to touch a car with a foreign title that's not been transferred, and retail sales is out of the question.

The longer these cars sit, the more likely they will turn into a rat-infested nest. See this story for reference:

I understand it's a lot of stress, but it would also be sad to see a car this pristine go to waste. As Loki said, maybe it just needs a fresh tank of gas. Maybe it's not a bad engine at all. There should be rotary shops near the area that can help.

@Shedden
NO!!!!
You should get it back, and even if you decide you can't afford to keep it, you can sell it to a fellow Canadian who will take care of it.

You don't even know what's wrong with it!
It could be a loose wire or vacuum hose.

Get your car back, or demand they pay you fair value for it.

You should be angry and determined to teach them a lesson for all their possible female victims of the future.

DON'T REWARD CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR!!!

*EDIT
Do you have children or grandchildren?
It would make an AWESOME graduation present, even if the engine is truly failing.
I drove mine for 2 years after a failed test.

PLEASE, don't give up!
