I was replacing my long time due differential fluid with some good RedLine 75W90.
I'm pretty sure it was the original fluid and a little surprise was attached to the drain plug magnet.
No issue has been observed with the differential before and after the fluid change.
It must have been swimming in the differential for quite a while.
Any thoughts on what it could be?
Looks like a chip off the end of an axle shaft, but whatever it is, its taken a pounding. Whatever chewed on it, will look like that too and my guess is its your spider gears.
No, it’s a clutch cone fragment, the LSD is failed/failing and needs replacement. I gave my factory LSD to someone to use as a replacement several months ago (mine has an OS Giken LSD) and his had similar pieces in it per the attached photos. It appears that the four cutout areas are a weak point and start shedding off.

Oh WOW! Thanks for the feedback. I will start saving some money to replace that part.
You have to replace the entire LSD or swap in a different differential.
Mazda doesn’t sell the LSD parts separately. The LSD unit is only sold and serviced as an assembly.
Thanks for the details. It's still running really fine. I hope it won't need to be replaced soon. Pretty sure those units aren't cheap. Summer is coming and I need to replace my radiator fan drives + thermostat.

You bet differentials aren’t cheap! That’s a dangerous chunk to be missing. I wouldn’t be doing burnouts or anything until it’s replaced. Be careful out there.

No worries! I won't put any unnecessary stress on the damn thing until I'm ready to replace. Cheers
Just changed my differential fluid for the first time since owning my car and I found two of these chunks as well... unfortunate but I hadn't noticed it having any issues up to this point so I will just ignore it until it blows up I guess.
