starting issues

hi guys,i just bought a 2003 rx8 as a non starter, I'm going to have a a engine rebuild done on her but I've been playing,i can get her started by going through the de-flood method but she only runs for about 5 mins then stall..
There is a loud popping noise coming from her which I think is the cat..could this be the problem.
The car only has 36,000 miles on the clock..anyone else got any ideas

Go through ALL of the ignition system. The CAT could very well be clogged, it's a common issue. Have you had a compression test done on it?

thanks for the reply'
I've checked the ignition system all is fine,in fact have really good spark before plug and at plug electrode.
Not had ompression test done, tbh I bought this as a non starter so just trailered it home I'm guessing, not knowing anything about these that my standard compression tester will not be any use???

Your standard compression tester is almost useless. sorry to say. Make sure the eccentric shaft position sensor plug is clean and connected. You can pull the plugs and put your finger over the hole. That will give you at least an idea if there is any compression there at all.

How far are you from AZ? There are several places i would recommend. BHR, Mazmart (if they still do rebuilds, not sure call paul). Just saying WEST doesn't help me in the least bit.
