Angry Sooooo Potential purchase. (crossing my fingers)

So guys, my prerequisite for myself going from lurker to member was I had to genuinely be looking into getting an RX-8, I'd really hoped for a 6 port.....but I don't think I'll be able to find one for a reasonable price. I went to go visit 2004 Mazda rx-8 w/ new engine today, got the rundown on work done that he had documented, and a test drive. I saw proof that the engine was indeed put in 100 miles -/ the current odometer. He stated there is often a hard time going into 4th gear where you have to pretty much pound it in. And I noted a back fire around the same time, he said that's common... kinda worries me. I did get the vin from it, and plan to get it checked out tomorrow. Both the Magflow and the preformance coils were put in by the previous owner, and the current one doesn't know if there's an aftermarket cat or if the coil replacement was even caused by the coils going bad. There's quite a bit of body damage... namely the front and rear bumper. The bottom lip is completely cracked and bent in a bit due to the high driveway curb and low clearance. The back looks like it was removed to put the magflow in and wasn't reconnected properly.

TL;DR, Owner took good care of the car while he had it however only redlined onces a week, and generally shifted in mid 4k's; Mods with no paper trail.

For $10,000, you can do WAY better than that. The new engine is good, but it sounds like his 4th gear syncro is going. I'd knock off at least $1k for that. With a good transmission, I'd put the price at more like $7,000. MAYBE $8,000. With a transmission that is probably failing, I'd drop it to $6,000, MAYBE $7,000. Add in easily visible body damage and the price drops further.

Example, 24 miles from that one is this one. $20 and 20,000 miles less, GT trim, no apparent body damage, etc... Unknown engine history of course, but transmission issues are unlikely, dealer would probably have caught that.

Another also 24 miles from that one is this one. Same price listed, 18,000 miles lower, also new engine and new clutch, manual which means 6-sport that you wanted.

Or this one, which is similar mileage, listed for $2,000 less, GT trim, manual (so it's a 6-port), though it's a bit over 3 hours away from you. That would be worth $2,000 imo.

Knock $500-ish off the max price you would pay and start looking somewhere you could travel to for far better options. Don't settle, and don't overpay. Doing both appears moderately foolish

Mhhhm, I plan to wait about a month to let all my options sink in, as I stated in my intro post, I feel dirty for having you do so much work for me RIWWP, I can barely even count the amount of pages I have open that have car searches, but thank you so much for your input. I have all of those up but the last one. I had thought that 6 ports where a 2006+ ONLY o.O. Or is it actually any 6 speed manual has a 6 port ?

Nope. In the US, the only 4 ports were 2004 and 2005 automatic transmissions. The manuals for 2004 and 2005 are 6-ports, along with all 2006+, regardless of transmission.

I took 4 months to find my 8, and then flew out to Ohio from RI to pick it up. Don't settle

I'll poke my nose in too. Don't settle for less than you want as you'll just regret it. I haggled quite hard with a dealer for mine, not something I normally do, and got a fair amount off the price.
Don't be an **** but do be strict about what it's worth and don't pay more. It's easy to get a little too keen. Good luck and I'll enjoy chatting when you buy that perfect car.

Well how about them apples, I apparently miss ready your "new and potential owners" post last night. I have been ruling out most 04-05 because I wanted a 6 port. Good thing I have all those tabs up still. I really needed to open my search up a bit 150 miles wasn't enough to get good prices. I'd really like to keep it under $13k, might be able to go up to $15k if I can find a trade in for my current car ( very unlikely)

For $15k, you should be able to get a 50-70,000 mile 2007-2008 GT trim with records, AT LEAST. You might even be able to get a 2009-2010 for that price.

No joke.

Ohh, now you're getting me giddy. However I know I'll most likely have to go cross country for that sort of deal. I most certainly am looking forward for the months to come. And hopefully once I get my foot in the door I'll be able to start contributing around here as well.

One example: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8s-sale-w...er-red-245493/

$15,000 for a 2006 copper red shinka with 19,000 miles.

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8s-sale-w...da-rx8-245884/ $11,000 for a 2006 30,000 miles

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8s-sale-w...-miles-245125/ 2006 Shinka with 64,000 for only $1,700 more than the one you listed to begin with.

Keep looking It's worth it.

I drove mine coast to coast 3 times. Fantastic long distance car (if the mileage isn't something that is going to cripple you)

Yea, having it won't break the bank for me... but if I need to put 2k plus miles on it just to buy it, it may hurt a bit as gas is almost up to 5$ a gallon here. >_<
