should i be worried..?

Hey fellas! I just bought myself an 06 type s and loving it! There has been one thing that's been bothering me for the last few days tho and hopefully someone here can help my paranoia. I have an aftermarket water temp gauge and oil temp gauge installed in the car and the readings have always been between 90 to 100 degrees Celsius when cruising, (the gauge beeps at 100 degrees and stops beeping when it drops under 100 again, I think this is when the fan is being activated?). I'm not sure if this happens with everyone's 8 or if there's something else happening that's making the car very hot. Also I hosed it down yesterday after a trip (keep my baby shiny and clean :D) and when the water hit the exhausts they started steaming like crazy. Don't know if I'm being a paranoid new 8 owner, if someone could help me out i'd really appreciate it.

Also I checked the dipstick and looks like the previous service had put in a little too much oil as the oil is just over the full mark, would this be the cause?

Welcome, I haven't noticed steam, but 8's exhaust do get very hot. That's normal. Misfires could make it even hotter. Check your ignition health, get codes scanned, to be safe.
Not sure what °100C is, but 220F is considered generally to be the limit of acceptable temps. Overheating an 8 can cause serious damage.
I don't know about your gauge, but it's possibly a warning.
You may want to search for overheating issues. It's very important. Also be sure to read the new owner stickies.
Good luck!

100F = 212F. If you are hitting that, you have a cooling system problem.

Time for an overhaul. Replace the radiator, coolant lines, and thermostat. Not sure where you are to give you options, guessing that you aren't in the US due to the "type s reference". You can do it all in the US for about $400.

Where are you located mate? I have a type s and I live in nz. My coolant temps are in the low 80c's when cruising

What is a type S?

If you are hitting 100C/212F cruising what is your peak temp? I have hit as high as 210F for a split second going back into grid after a hard autocross run, but again only for a second before the cooling system catches up.

It's the 228/232/235/242 6 port engine with the sports suspension package (lsd, cf driveshaft, bigger brakes, etc...). It's called the 'type s' in several countries, the 'hi power' in europe, and the "manual transmission" in the US.

Lol wasn't 238 one of the numbers too? I had heard "Hi-power" before but missed the "Type S" somehow...

I'm located in NZ too (auckland), this is a problem because I only stay in the 80's when its cold out here or when I take the car out for a drive in the middle of night, other than that I hear a beep, or close to it, almost every time I take her out. could you recommend any rotary specialist down here I can take her for a check up? hopefully it will be covered in my warranty...

Does the beep occur only around 8,000rpm?

hey 100C is the peak then it goes back down to ~90C after the fans do their work, this is on a daily drive without pushing it past 5k revs, I am still getting used to the short gear ratios of a 6 spd and sometimes stays at 3- 4k rpm in gear, it seems to be a serious problem I was confused because the water temp gauge on the dash showed very small difference past half way mark :\

I hardly push the car to 8000rpm since the first time I noticed the noise from the temp gauge telling me its hot, have been too worried since then. the beep is coming from the aftermarket water temp gauge itself. It is a fresh import from japan could this be a reason I'm getting high temp readings? I've read that you need different liquids for different temperatures your driving in somewhere

Ah, ok, aftermarket gauge with warning. Handy.

As I noted before, it sounds like you need to overhaul your cooling system.

Thanks everyone for the help, just got back from an hour drive and temp readings were between 85 - 95C but mostly around 85, drove like a granny but hey it kept the temp down, i will take it in to have it checked in the next couple days just to be sure and keep the thread updated for those who are worried about the same issue.

Any overheating problems are of interest to me FWIW.
Please do post updates.
I personally get annoyed when people have issues, then don't follow up with updates.
This is an important problem with these cars, and I like getting as much info, especially current as possible,
Thanks in advance.
Good luck!
