shift **** difference?

i have noticed that some 6-speed rx8 shift ***** have a white background behind the shift pattern, and some have a black background. is there a difference (other than the color of course)? is it a change mazda made for a certain year? included in a specific package? i have tried searching and couldn't find an answer. it been bugging me for some reason.
