No, Seafoam is meant to burn inside the engine itself. What makes you think your SSV needs to be cleaned?

Tapping

Car ran fine 2 weeks ago. Had to jump the battery yesterday and this is what I heard. No smoking.

One thread about your issue is enough
The tapping isn't really a carbon problem, it's wear and tear on the linkage (or if you have blowby into the intake, on the engine).

Does it still run fine despite the tapping?

I wouldn't expect the carbon caked onto the SSV to be cleaned off that easily with seafoam, especially if it's very severe. You'd have to take it out and clean it.

Tapping

The reason for the second thread was someone asked why I thought it was the SSV so I sent them a video. The car does run fine besides the tapping.

Check the linkage and make sure it isn’t loose. I’ve had mixed luck with sea foam and the ssv, it’s worked a few times before, and a few times it did nothing. Either way, it was always a temporary fix. Best bet is to take an afternoon, remove it, clean it, and reinstall if everything looks good.

There's zero evidence that Seafoam does anything beneficial to any part of the engine.

A few years back IIRC it was RIWWP; did a few tests to see. If i am remembering correctly the best and most efficient path was essentially steam cleaning. Seafoam had results, i just dont believe they were anything to wag a stick at.

The plural of anecdote is not evidence.

I'm not saying it doesn't work, I'm just saying there isn't any evidence that says it does.

How do we prove or disprove any hypothesis?

Testing, investigation.

One member tested various methods with multiple cars then posted the results he got.

Who's next... ?

Not it

seafoam is 60% pale oil, 25% naphtha, and 15% alcohol. (https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum...Pale_Oil_in_Se)

naptha is a decent parts cleaner, and pale oil is a decarbonizer (not super strong, but it does eat mild carbon), alcohol is the same. It should eat carbon, but a PEA based cleaner may be more effective. Heck, so might steam, I’ve had good results with water before.

Sorry for the second post, but I figured I would add the ingredients and science about a few “seafoam” alternatives too:

Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO)
60-100% mineral oil
10-20% petroleum distillates
0.1-1% tricresyl phosphate (antiwear and extreme pressure additive in other lubricants)
0.1-1% Ortho Dichlorobenzene, a mild carbon remover
<0.1%
Para Dichlorobenzene, a precursor to a plastic polymer

I’ll update this post as I think of more options and find their MSDS sheets. If you guys think of any you’d like to see, let me know!

PEA is a known decarbonizer ingredient and fuel injector cleaner. ONLY USE PRODUCTS WITH PEA.
