S1 VS S2 clutch

I am getting ready to replace the clutch in my 2004 S1 and have seen that there are series specific clutches. Are they interchangeable? Is one preferable? What's the difference?

Thanks

The S1 and S2 have different 6 speed manual transmissions. I am 99% they are interchangeable, but there is no advantage to running the S2 clutch so just get the stock Exedy for your S1.

The 2004 and 2005 exedy replacement is $339, the 2006-2008 is $329 and the 2009 to 2011 replacement clutch is $259. I'll buy the 2004 part to be sure but the price difference is significant, I can only assume the 2009 to 2011 part is higher volume.

There is no difference between 2003-2008, where are you getting this info from? And is this the whole kit with pilot bearing, throw out bearing, etc?

Exedy lists the 2004-2005 as PN MZK1002, 2006-2008 as the MZK1007 and the 2009-2011 as PN MZK1014

Exedy says that the all 3 are 236mm in diameter. They all have 23 splines, but the 2004-2005 an 2009-2011 have a 1 1/16 spline diameter versus the 2006-2008 which is 1 1/32.

I'm 95% sure they are interchangeable. 9K's question is worth answering, however. What all is included in each of these kits? Are you sure you are comparing apples to apples?

These are the clutch kit offerings from exedy. They all appear to come with the disc, PP thow out bearing a small tube of lube and what look like they could be o rings or crush washers? I would say pilot bearing but it looks flat in the picture and there are 2 included with the 2004-2005 kit and 2009-2011 and only 1 with the 2006-2008 kit.

I would just call exedy but I'm sure they will just ask me what year I have and tell me to get the corresponding kit they list.

I would email charles@blackhaloracing.com, I have gotten all my Exedy's thru him, he would be able to clarify. I have a S2 transmission in my RX-8 now and when I compared everything I I could not find any differences. I have done several RX-8 clutch installs and three S2 transmission installs with locals and two of us are boosted and Hoss-05 is running the S2 trans with an S1 carbonetic clutch so I am 99% sure there are no changes.

I gave Exedy a jingle this afternoon. It turns out the 2004-2005 and 2009-2011 kits are the same with the exception of the release bearing. The 2006-2008 has a different disc and I believe he said the same release bearing as the 2004-2005.

I should add, I just looked up the parts from one of the Mazda online parts dealers. Mazda lists the same PN for the 2004-2005 and the 2006-2008 clutches. So either they were the same all along or Mazda feels they will interchange.

At the end of the day, I wound up just ordering the part that said it would work, clearly... Just was surprised to see the differences. I hope this has been at least educational for someone other than myself.
