Does it restart easily when it stalls or do you have to wait for it to cool down?

Do you have an aftermarket intake?

Pretty classic loss of compression then. Have a compression test, but the signs are there.

If you have a Mazda dealer or a rotary shop nearby, I'd set up a compression test. It'll cost 100-150 but will confirm the health of your engine. If the clues here are right, she's dead and you'll need to decide if you're willing to replace it or get another car. It's an automatic? i wouldn't bother, trade up to a more recent manual 8. The 04-05 automatics are the lowest power, most expensive to replace, most problematic version of the engine.

Keeping the Engine at an Idle
  • Ignition Coils
  • Spark Plugs
  • Spark Plug Wires
  • Engine Compression
  • E-Shaft Sensor (ESS)
  • Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)
  • Front O2 sensor
  • Catalytic Converter (Cat)
  • Intake Vaccum

For some reason I can’t create a new thread and thought I would pop into a forum with sort of the same issue as me. Im trying to get the car to a shop without having to tow it there, the car starts as i just put new battery/terminals spark plugs etc… I have the cat disconnected from the front end because it is extremely clogged. Im taking it to a shop for them to build a midpipe but the car will not stay on. Is the cat being disconnected at the front not allowing it to hold idle or is it most likely a different issue causing it? Thank you!

The cat being disconnected won't keep it from running. Does it stall when warmed up? When you start driving? Have you replaced the ignition coils? If they're failing that would be why your cat is clogged and why it won't stay on.

Does it restart easily when it does stall?

Ignition coils were replaced, I just put a new battery in today because i didn’t have any power or lights or anything. It started up the first time and as long as i would keep rpm’s from dropping it would stay running, i let it die and then when trying to start again it will crank but not fully turn over.

There was a stored misfire code for cyl 2, checked it out and the ignition coil for cyl 2 was not staying in correct took it out and it was cracked. Changed it out and car ran alot better but then eventually still died, battery light came on this time when it died so i’m gonna test the alternator, thank you!
