RX-8 Sketchy Starters

So I realize the horse has been beaten on this one, however: looking at the threads from 2010 and before, a lot of people were quoting starter prices in the $300 range whereas these days it seems your typical part mills like Advanced and AutoZone are selling the upgraded 2.0Kw starters for about $100-150.

Is this just due to a proliferation of after market manufacturers making cheaper parts or is there a caveat here? I realize the 07+ year starters just bolt on to the 04-05 models, but the number of teeth is different (13 versus 11, but that shouldn't matter). Am I missing anything here, cause I'm reluctant to buy such a cheap part when the knowledge base on the forum seems to state that they cost much more.

Thanks!

You want the 2009+ manual starter.

I paid almost $400 from mine from Mazda, now you can get them here:

Wow, talk about convenience. I didn't realize Amazon even sold auto parts.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Oh and here is a visual. From top to bottom, S1 1.4KW starter, S1 2.0KW starter, and the S2 starter.

Just bought the starter you listed there from Amazon. Should have it by Thursday and I'll swap it into my '05 manual. Will post pictures / results, thank you!

It will be the best upgrade you will ever make. Assuming your battery is healthy that is.

Just got new OEM coil packs and a brand new battery last night. Car has been starting up right away, but it's got 86k miles on it so it's only a matter of time before it needs a rebuild

If you do a site search, you can easily find out. Type "site:rx8club.com" into Google search, followed by your question, for next time.

*There is no difference in terms of fitment. All years of manual transmission starters fit any year of manual RX-8's. Number of teeth don't matter in this case.

The real thing to look out for is the sketchy aftermarket starters, they seem to be too good to be true and are usually under $100, so I'd be skeptical.
