Thumbs up Recommended Maintenance For High Mileage RX8

Hi All,

I just ended up scoring a 2006 BB RX8 6-Speed from a tow yard recently for next to nothing. Super clean, just had a bent clutch pedal assembly which I replaced with a $90 dollar part, and the thing drives like a charm. The title is clean, it's been in no wrecks, and the body for the most part has no dents, just a couple scratches.

It's got 155K miles, just took it for an oil change. Doesn't seem to have hot-start issues, as it fires right up after sitting for a short time, like on a run to McDonalds or something like that. Replaced the air filter, filled all the fluids, got the easy stuff out the way.

Is there any maintenance you suggest beyond this?

I want to make sure I get a real solid idea of the care of the car and what I need to do to make sure it stays running.

Any key problem areas to take a look at and make sure they are good to go?

Thanks!

Further to reading that thread, if also get a rotary specific compression test. You may not show any signs or symptoms. But rather than blindly throwing money at it, it will give you an idea of where to start. And possibly to start saving your pennies for a rebuild...

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. I'll start there. I appreciate it!

Or do it yourself.

Install this Rotary Compression Tester on your phone https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...pressiontester
You just Need to find a sensor that goes into your phone tho, which I can't find.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the heads up! It looks like if you go to nopistons.ru they are selling the attachment that goes with the app for Android. The only problem is in the site they state they only made like 20 of them or so and it's up for pre-order.

I'd really consider this, but I definitely would like to reach out to see if the pre-order is still a thing, or have they moved onto bulk production of their units. I think it only pans out to $175USD which seems pretty good.

RX8 Club’s recommended maintenance schedule, more comprehensive and proactive than Mazda’s schedule.
30,000 miles:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
At 100k, anything original in the cooling system is really suspect and failure prone. It represents the biggest threat to your engine.
