Problems
 

Okay, so, I bought this 2005 Rx-8 with 86 thousand miles a while back and when I bought her, she had no problems. Recently tho it starts up PERFECTLY cold, but when I start it when the engine is warm, it takes a good 3 seconds before it catches. Also, the acceleration does not seem to be that great. I fear that I've lost compression... any ideas as to what could be going on? Any fixes that wouldn't bankrupt me?

Check plugs coils leads and Cat

At 86k I would check compression first. If that is good then start looking elsewhere.

If compression is low you need a rebuild. No way around it.

You need to get a rotary specific compression test to start with. Can get one done at the Mazda dealership or a rotary shop if their is one local to you. You may also be able to ask here if anyone that lives close to you had a tester may let you borrow or rent one. Once you get the compression test, three pressure numbers and rpm from each rotor, post the results here and you will get advice on what to do next.

Tertiary to this, make sure if you are getting it done at Mazda they have a working, calibrated compression tester. You'd be surprised how many looked at me like I was speaking an alien language when I asked about such things.
