I just finished changing the oil on my 2004 RX8 (5w30 conventional), and after filling up I noticed the oil was above the top line on the dipstick. I’ve already had oil overflow into my intake once before, so the car now has an oil catch can installed to help prevent that. Do I still need to worry about the oil level, or is it ok to leave it above the top line.

Just just crack the drain plug and let some come out. That's a bit too high for an overfill. And FYI at that level, you're about a 1/4 quart over. Which is a lot.

I originally autocrossed with an additional quart of oil out of ignorance 16 years ago, imo it’s no big deal at the indicated level. The exception might be if the engine is worn and has excessive blowby going into the oil sump, which could result with it burping up some into the intake, still no bog deal imo.

Letting *some* out at the drain bolt is easier said than controlled. Breaking an oil cooler line loose is an alternative for letting a limited amount out, but may depend on your familiarity with it and mechanical ability. The non-bolted interconnection joints on the oil cooler lines are held together with a clover-shaped circlip; pull it out with needle-nose pliers and the line simply separates.

I replaced the drain plug with a Fumoto valve, do that on most vehicles I own. Makes oil changes easier and less mess, also in a case like yours makes it simple to let a little oil out for level adjusting. I agree you're probably fine just running with that level, but then again the full line is there for a reason so for peace of mind I'd probably drain some out. BTW use a long spout funnel when adding oil to make sure it doesn't go to the intake.

Dino oil is cheap. Just drain it and refill.
I wonder if you can run a small tube into the oil stick tube and pump some out from there.
