possible future owner
My local mazda dealer has a 04 with. 68k miles for $9k and I was thinking about trading in my 6s for it I've always wanted a 7 but can't find one so an 8 is the next best thing but my main question is is it really that much work to keep it running and as easy to **** up the engine like all the stories I've heard about

Best way to keep it running is being consistant, and having spare money is always nice when something does go wrong.

Short answer: If possible engine failure makes you that uncomfortable and/or paranoid, then this is not the car for you. You have to accept the issues or ownership will turn into a nightmare. It still could anyway, but your mindset going in is far more important than statistics. The more prepared you are, financially and mentally, the less of a problem any of this will actually be for you.

Run .. run fast and far
In absolutely perfect shape ... maybe 5k and I mean perfect
Furthermore if you have to ask is it really that much work to keep up?
This is not the car for you especially an 04 or 05
Or an 06 ... 07 or 08 ... likely go with an 09+ should be safe for the next year maybe 2

Life After 8K RPM....
$ 9k is too much for an 04.
Is it really that much work to keep it running?
well, its not an accord or a cammry. Its intended to be a sports car, if every once in a while looking under the hood, checking the oil level, sutdiying which products to use and which to avoid, and redlining once a day is too much of a work then RX-8 is not for you my friend.
This car does not ask, but demands attention, Involvement and Care.
Staying on top of the maintenance is the key.. That's what I have learned in last 15 months and 73k kms with my rx8. She is at 249k kms at the moment, runs good problem free no issues.
Read and master the Thread Ninja posted above thats your rx8 bible..
All the best :-)
