If your budget is similar to the amount of searching you appear to have done, stick with the rotary
If your budget is under 10k, stop right now.
If your budget is over 15k, you have some LS-based options depending on how much you want to DIY.
If you have no budget but huge DIY talent, you can do anything in unlimited amount of time.

This. All of this. Also, if you happen to own your own garage and have access to pretty much any tool imaginable you could probably fit something weird in there. However, if you aren't willing to spend probably 5x what the car is currently worth on a reliable running swap, quit while you are ahead.

IMO, the best swap options are in this order; 20 year old Isuzu V6, 20 year Pontiac V6, a 25+ year old 1JZ, or a 60 year old carbed small block Chevy.

And here's a DIY-type-thread on converting an RX8 to electric, with people who have done it. It's like a mirror universe, where everyone is evil and has a mustache. Or are we the evil side? Oh no..
